Topic: 20k XMs Posted: September 26 2003 at 6:01am |
I'm sure this is a previously discussed topic but... I have 400w magnetic probe start ballasts but I'm dieing to try a 20k bulb. A few concerns I have is... I've read that the 20k do not produce the same par as the 10k, there for not promoting the same growth? I've also read that the 20k XM burn at about 12k color? I really want the bluer color but do not want any ill effects. Any thoughts or experiences?

I just saw Eric's (Fire Shrimp) tank yesterday and it was superb. The color on the corals was great. His corals looked very healthy. I was impressed to say the least. Next time I change bulbs I'm going to try something different. I'm going to see if someone has a old bulb of a color that I'd like to try and borrow it. Our tanks are all so different. It's hard to get a real idea of how a bulb is going to look without actually seeing it in our own tanks. I've seen some great comparisons here on the web about color variations. Although when you get something in your tank it becomes very unique. I have an Iwaki anyone can try just to see how yellow it is.

Thanks Kirk,
The 20k xm burn into about 15 to 16 k look which for me is just about right when your looking at your tank IMO im getting great growth out of my acro and LPS and soft so for me it would be hard for me to want to try any other bulb now.

Thanks Eric, I appreciate the invite!! It will be a while before I'm ready to change out the bulbs so I should be able to make it down before that. I’ll keep in touch…

Got the 20K bulbs today, and I must say that I am very impressed. The resulting color of my corals, fish, etc is exactly what I've been trying to duplicate since I bought Metal Halides. I'm running mine with Actinic suplementation, and it looks great. Running the VHO's doesn't intensify the blue effect much, but rather adds a "glowing" effect to green corals, and makes Flesh colored colt, etc look almost pinkish. It looks great!
Thanks Eric for the recommendation.

I have been wanting to switch to a 20K for a long time. I really think the color rendition and spectrum is much more natural especially for softies. What wattage are your bulbs. I run a 175 watt 10K MH. I have heard that the 175 watt 20K aren't as good. Is this true? Anyone running a 175watt 20K?
Thanks

I'm running 250 Watt bulbs, so I can't tell you what the 175's are like.

Hey all,
If you like the 20 k's, check out this deal I found online. I am not sure if they are any good, but it may be worth looking into.

I don't know the place Paul was talking about, but www.oceanencounter.com has $9 off the Marine Depot price for Radium 20K's, FWIW. Click on "Specials".

Not bad. I've never seen the radiums. But I do like the XM's. They're the same price.
