Topic: Mean Tomato Clown Posted: July 04 2003 at 5:20am |
I've had a pair of Tomato Clowns in my aquarium now for probably well over 14 months. For some reason in the past month the female has become one mean sob. I'm almost afraid to put my hand in my aquarium anymore. She bites me non-stop.(they have teeth!) Its not that it really hurts, but scares the crap out of me. I did a water change yesterday and I think she probably bit me 15+times. I'm just wondering if this is normal, or something anybody else has experienced? Thanks!

Maybe she protecting something? Our male did that when our couple first mated up. You're right about it not hurting, except when I was in the tank I would jump every time he hit me, and bang my hand on the cross bar.Hard! Ours didn't mellow out until we got them in a bigger tank. Now, he's seems afraid of me and they've picked out a new home....

My maroon clown fish do the very same thing. The female would bit me right off the bat, and it frustrated me so I flicked it once. Since then it has been afraid of me. And I don't recommending flicking the fish as it potentially could harm the fish. However, the male is overly protective and will bit me constantly. It seems that they get more aggresive when they are in the 'mood'.

This is normal for clown fish. I have been bit many a time from mine. The first time scared me and made me jump. Its actually kind of funy.

I would consider that a good thing. At least he/she is not hiding behind the rocks all the time. I agree with the others that maybe they are about to spawn. I think aggression shows a healthy fish. If they wre always scared and never came out, then what fun would that be.

Well thats good to know. I wasn't overly concerned, I've heard this about them before. I'll try flicking it to see if that doesn't scare it off a little. Its not that I really mind, but between it and my fire shrimp my arm ends up bruised up everytime I do a water change/cleaning jumping and hitting something.(Just Joking).
Happy 4th!

Figured out why she has been so mean. They got eggs everywhere in a patch of xenia that they host.

Right on! I am still trying to get my tomato clowns to mate, after about 4 months, she finally accepted her mate. But it seems like a platonic relationship so far.
Are you still planning on flicking her? She's just a mom protecting her babies.

After I saw the eggs, I think I will shy away from the flicking idea.

I have a Huma Trigger that the first time I added rock to the tank after I had added him he bit me. He tried a couple more times so I caught him in a net and held him there while I finished my work then let him go. Now when I do something in the tank he'll just watch me closely but won't try to supplement his diet with my flesh anymore.

wow that is awesome! Congrats on the new babies! I had a huge tomato clown when I had my other sw tank. That guy was so mean..i swear he watched and waited for me to open the lid. He was always in his anemone and when I had to put my hands in the tank for maintenance or cleaning, he would attack me relentlessly. It never hurt but it sure scared me half to death!
