Well, I was in SLC Friday morning and had a few hours to kill and decided to see if I could track down any utah rock for my tank.  I've read the intructions on how to get to the place many times and the only thing that I could remember was that there was mention of the second Grantsville Exit.  So I took it and headed toward Stansbury Island.  Once I passed the evaporation ponds I arrived at Broken arrow salt road (which is clearly marked) and instead of going left out to the flats I turned right and "bajaed" my saturn coupe up the road as far as I could go.  I got out and at first didn't see much so I walked up a little higher and started finding little pieces of what appeared to be aragonite spread out here and there.  Some pieces where very pourous and had interesting shapes but others were not so interesting.  I gathered about 200 lbs (all that would fit in my trunk) which now is washed and in my 125g tank.   There may be better stuff out there but what I found I was pretty impressed with.  (Especially for free)

The interesting thing was that the rock only was found at a certain elevation just above the first bench on the island.  I'm not sure if other people have had luck there as well but I thought I would share my experience and findings and hopefully make it easy for other people to find as well.   (definetly worth the trip!)

If anyone would like any info on where I found the rock don't hesitate to call.

You're right that it's likely found at the same elevation everywhere along the ancient lakebed/shoreline because it was formed when the lake started to evaporate and concentrate it's calcium and carbonates.  But I'm surprised that it's above the first bench.  I couldn't see benches out by Aragonite (where I collected it) so I couldn't tell what elevation it was.  But I always thought Lake Bonneville dropped rapidly from the upper bench (Bonneville) to the lower one (Provo) when the lake spilled though the snake river gorge and into the Pacific.  It evaporated from the Provo level to it's current level over time... which is when I figured the tufa was formed.   Strange, that it's above the Provo bench...

Thanks Dallen for sharing with us a new collection spot. It seems that LBTR occurs all over. Dallen and I had a conversation about this after he had returned. Knowing somewhat the topography of Stansbury Island, I would say that it was the same elevation as the usual spots we collect on the mountains at the Lakeside and Aragonite Exits.

There is some really cool LBTR north of the sand collection spot, over in the mud flats west of the road next to Stansbury Island. It would be similar to what Dallen found on the slope but it would be the LBTR that eroded away and washed down the hill. Thanks to Bob/Fisher32 for finding that new collection spot.
