When I bought the leather about 8 months ago it was only attached to it's rock by a small (1/4" diameter) strand of it's base. And over time it has just kind of shrunk down until tonight when it finally gave out and seperated. Sorry the pic isn't the best but it kinda shows how small the attachment was to begin with. The little nub to the right is all it was ever attached with, and the very next nub to the left is the other half of it's base.
Mark the leather has been in several different spots in the tank over it's 8 months with me. I had just recently moved it to a little less lighted area in the tank 2 days ago, but it's base has been looking like it was going to rip apart for almost as long as I have had it. My tank temp hovers around 79-81. My alk readings from my new test kit (salifert, much easier then my old red sea test kit) are right around 8dkh. I have been testing daily over the last week trying to nail down the exact amount of b-ionic I need to add daily to keep the alk at 8. So i would say that I have been from 10dkh to 7.6dkh over the lest week. Prior to having the salifert test kit I used red sea and those told me that I was always at 8 - 8.1 and when I did the first test with the salifert kit I was at 7.4dkh. As far as anything irritating it, I have no idea as everything in my tank has appeared to live in harmony so far.
