Just saw this ad on KSL http://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=218&ad=33764624&cat=371&lpid=1&search=&ad_cid=7If you could get a good deal on this you could have your own fish store up and running. Or maybe a few of us on here pool our money together, pick thru the items we want and sell the rest? I was tempted to buy the whole lot of it myself (if i could get a decent deal) but im pretty sure I would come home to all my possessions on the lawn and the locks to the house changed.

That's actually really tempting. Aside from the problem of where to put it all.

I just guessed some of the prices here but using a 60% of retail price for the tanks, pumps, and skimmers it looks like $3000 worth of product. I couldnt see much of what he has for lights, rocks, and other equipment.

I called this gentlemen last night and he did not know much about it. I guess there was a store in Ogden that went under. His son walked away from it so he is trying to recover from a loss. He does not know much about what he has which is unfortunate. He has a couple of large tanks I am having him measure for me later.
It seems like he has some value, but at $5K you could not even flip that without wasting time. I want some of his larger tanks, but am unsure if they are even worth it. Some builders can build really nice brand new ones for better rates.
Sucks I'm in Orem or I'd just go see.
If you end up doing it, and part out, I want a big tank! Haha.

Marcoss you're in Orem? Why haven't we met? Haha, on just tanks I wouldn't throw 5k at it. If there's lighting and other equipment for them maybe I'd go check it out. What large tanks are available?

Hi Acro, not sure why we haven't met. I am new to this whole hobby but addicted. I can only imagine that if this was coke, I would be dead already.
Its more than just tanks, he said it was several protein skimmers, etc. Its basically a fish store he moved into storage. His son just walked away from the store so he packed it up and put it into a shed. He has two 130 gallon tanks that he says are frag tanks. Those are what I am interested in. He is kind of an older gentlemen and said that "these tanks grew corals for my son" and also said that he still had corals. I think he means to say he has rock because the coral would be long dead.
I wish I could remember the name of the store. It was something aquatic in Ogden.
Honestly, he has so much stuff that I would personally not want to deal with it. There are elements I want but I am unsure if they work or are damaged. He said all the tanks are glass, but I worry some might be damaged from being crammed in a tight place. His images on KSL seem to have a ton of stuff in a small area.

Oh, and I meant to say I work in American Fork but live in Saratoga Springs. My main tank is at home and I am building my frag at work.

Hmm seems my post earlier didnt actually post...
THis is all the remaining inventory left from Aquarium Masters going out of business. There are lights (mostly 2 bulb t5s) and a few stands. He says there is still rock and misc additives/medications and all sorts of misc plumbing. I think there is probably about 5k worth of equipment here but unless your trying to open your own fishstore i dont think you would make any profit.
Going to check it out after work today and see what all is still here. Will post a few pics.

I'm excited to see! There are so many bargains to be found in this industry. I buy most of my stuff new because I am too impatient to wait for stuff, but there is always nice stuff for really low prices. This industry has to have one of the lowest returns I have ever seen for resell.

If you are really looking to make a profit, my suggestion would be to not open a fish store from scratch(or purchase a pile of equipment, because that is from scratch)
Here is the formula for success in this industry
Have a spouse will to go through hell with you. Work harder and longer than everyone else (so an hourly rate is a joke) Pay yourself next to nothing for YEARS while you figure out 1- what your customer base really wants to purchase (always changing but takes a good 3 years to learn) 2- how to reach that customer base (takes at least 2 years but is also always changing) 3- how to take care of the animals (takes a minimum 3 years, to just get basic knowledge, but you will never know it all) 4- how to do almost everything (so that people will ask you for advice) 5- create high quality relationships with vendors (takes many years because if you don't have a large enough customer base, you won't spend enough for them to even care who you are) 6- a whole lot of luck (I believe that Luck is where preparation meets opportunity) 7- manage risk (have an ability and support group to manage the stress, but also an understanding of risk is magnified, and to avoid those things) 8- business savy (there is so much to this) 9- much more that I still have not figured out.
Anyway there is a pretty good history of retail stores opening and closing here in Utah, that by itself would keep me from starting this journey over again. The success rate is low and takes a lot more sacrifice than I would want to put my family through again. Again this is just personal opinion from my experience, however I am thankful for where I am at this point and fully recognize the oportunities that I have had.

I remember when Jerry sold corals out of an acrylic cube in his front room. He's come quite a long way. It's true that most of those who open stores end up taking them down later. Sad, but at least you can sometimes get some cheap tanks out of it

Im not looking to open a store. This guy just seems desperate to recoup some of his money but he doesn't really know much about any of the equipment he has. I am hoping to be able to get us some decent deals on some tanks/equipment while putting a few bucks in his pocket. He really wants to sell the entire lot as a package but I think I have enough people wanting to buy tanks I can wheel and deal with him.

One advantage I had was that I was self employed for many years (almost all of my adult life) before I moved to fish retail. That being said, if I were to make an analytical and financial decision, knowing what I know now, opening a store from scratch would be WAY down on my list of available options for a startup.

Perfectly stated. My wife and I are self employed as well and I can totally relate to what you are saying. I really like your business savvy comment and the fact that their are so many unknowns. I have several friends that are in school and always tell me about what they learned in these advanced business classes yet, most of that is not true until you truly test it out. A well thought out business plan is just that; you won't know if it'll work until you bust your ass, takes calculated risks, and try it out.
I've learned that mistakes will happen and days will suck really bad but we keep on pushing through and make it work.
I think entrepreneurs who actually start a business are nuts. But I like it.

Once you start this life you cannot stop. I sometimes want to thank my dad as I leaned from him and his businesses and sometimes I want to be like "Damn it, why didn't you just have a 9-5 job I could have learned from"!!

Dude it's awesome, I need 4 more vinyl. Just the NAME and the same way you did it.
My dad took a different route than I have chosen. I did get his work ethic and drive, however I have a better way, or less ability to handle and judge risk (however you look at it). Lol

Ok just got back from Ron's place and will post pics as soon as i can (going to help move a 300g here soon) but heres an update.
He is really wanting to sell the entire lot to get it out of his storage/workshop but he says if he cant sell it by the end of the month he may try a garage sale for all the fish equipment.
He basically drained the tanks, disconnected the plumbing and thru everything into storage. Trying to walk around to look at everything was a bit overwhelming as nothing is organized; theres a tote of misc wat finnex heaters, theres totes of misc sized 2 bulb T5 fixtures, a few 30g totes of dry rock, totes of misc plumbing/bulkheads/etc....
Now for what you've been waiting for... All of these have had the sides/back painted either blue or black Also there arent any stands, these are tanks only. (2) 210g with overflow (72x28x24) I saw at least (2) 72" MH with T5 combo lights (2) 180g with overflow (72x24x24) (1) 150g (drilled as a sump) All of the following are drilled up top w/lockline (3) 75g (9) 55g (1) 50g (2) 45g cube (2) 30g (12) 20g
(1) biocube (looks like 24g?) (1) biocube bubble looking thing (looks like 12ish gal?)
(1) 150 rubbermaid stock tank
(1)50ish gal Frag tank (48x20x12)
(3) Euro Reef RS250 protien skimmers (huge 30ish inches tall)
Saw 3 Ecoray LEDs but couldnt get to them to see model
(2) BlueLine 100 pumps
Sure theres tons more stuff that im forgetting but there was really to much to list (and more stuff we couldnt get access to as there is so much stuff crammed into this dudes workshop.

I explained to him that I would put this ad up and see how many people would want to buy as much of this as possible to make him an offer. So if your interested in something post here or PM me what you are interested in. Ron doesnt seem interested in putting prices on individual tanks so give me an idea of what you think is a fair price for what you want, ill try to tally up the ammounts and make him an offer on a bulk purchase...
