Topic: Fish Dying! Posted: April 30 2014 at 9:17am |
Last week my blue spotted jaw fish died and this week I woke up to find one of my two clownfish dead. The fish that died this morning appeared to be perfectly healthy last night, but this morning I found my CuC devouring him. The second clown fish that I have in my tank also appears to be unhealthy this morning. He seems to be gasping for air and appears to have a white film on his fins, which I hope you can see in the photos. My tank parameters are all good as is my temperature. Any suggestions would be sincerely appreciate. I'd really like to save the second clown fish if possible.

Possibly marine velvet. Is it spots or more of a white film over the fish?

you are right I went to my fish book. It's a great example of marine velvet.

More of a white film. Although looking at the picture, it also appears to have some white spots.

Thanks. I just read the article. I've removed the fish to my quarantine tank and will treat it with copper. Is the disease going to stay in my tank (i.e., is this going to happen again when I add new fish)?

I ran into marine velvet and after losing 6 fish in 3 days I quarantined the remaining 4 fish for 8 weeks in copper. I allowed my tank run without any fish for that time period so that the disease would die out (it can't survive without a host for certain parts of its lifecycle). I now quarantine all incoming fish before putting them in my tank.
The best advice I can give is to treat with copper and run your tank fallow for 6-8 weeks to be completely sure it's gone from your tank. Then make sure to properly quarantine all new fish.

Thanks. I should mention that I've had these fish for over 6 months and haven't added any new fish since then (I have added several corals). Would this have just developed on its own? Everything I've read indicates that it is generally brought into a tank by a new fish.

Does velvet spread to all fish species? I've quarantined my clownfish, but I still have two small gobies in the tank.

After looking at some more pictures, I'm thinking this is likely Brooklynella. What do others think? Here are some photos of fish with Broolynella:

I'm going with Brooklynella as well (good call zionnoiz). It doesn't look quite like velvet, and Brook is most common with clownfish. I'd go with a formalin treatment.

I don't know for sure, but I get most of my meds from Fish4U or The Aquarium. They usually have a good selection.
