Topic: am I totally nuts? Posted: April 04 2012 at 3:51pm |
A few months ago I set up a 200W solar panel to run a small bank of batteries than in turn runs my water pump to my house. This way if the power goes out we still have water. After running it for a few months I noticed that I have oversize my system, so I wired it up to an inverter that runs to my tank (I don't run it all the time, but it is ready in case the power goes out). Well guess what, Sunday our power went out for about 8 hours. So I ran my tank off my solar power, and it worked great. But then my wife asked me if we could use the power to run our stove to cook some food..... I said no, because it is only a 300W (600w surge)inverter. She seemed a little upset that I would take care of the fish, but let our family starve....

You know, come to think about it she is. Just a couple weeks ago I got
the idea that I should pre-mix some salt water in case I needed some
quickly. As I was filling the bucket with RO water, my wife went to get
a drink of water (we use the same ro unit for drinking and the
aquarium). When no water came out she asked what was wrong. But she
didn't like it when I told her I used all the water for the aquarium, and she would have to wait for it to re-fill the tank.

Lol I almost made the same mistake when setting my house up with a generator. I was thinking how big of a unit do I need to run my fish tank if there was a power outage. She was thinking what unit would run the fridge stove and furnace to keep the family safe and have food to eat. End result.....bought a unit to satisfy both needs. It's nice when the power goes out to be watching direct tv and eating dinner when your neighbor comes over and asks so is it just your house that has power? Lol

To answer the original question, Yes you are "nutty as a fruitcake." As I write this, I have other tabs open on my screen so that if my wife comes to check on what I'm doing she won't get upset at me for being on the MB again.

You must have a huge bank of batteries to run the stove! Did you tie into the grid?

I am not going to run a 220v range, just a little 120v burner to cook on. I currently have it tied to the grid, but plan to add a small battery bank (I can connect the solar panels when the power is out), and a 5kw inverter to run off the bank as backup.

Awesome! You should see what happens when I make a suggestion to my parents about something that would make things more convenient for me to work on the tank...sometimes I seriously wonder if I'll even be alive long enough to work on it again. ...took me months to get an RO system...I've been working on getting a generator, or solar power, but so far that's about as likely as me getting another tank soon (not at all likely).
