Topic: A little advice please Posted: November 21 2004 at 4:00pm |
I have a 46 bow front with a tempered glass bottom I am in the process of building a new stand for it (right now it is on my nightstands) I am wondering what suggestions yall have about what is vitall to a stand? should I incorpoate an Auto top off tank? what about storage? Refugium space overflow etc?

So you're thinking about doing an auto top-off? That would keep your water level constant. Are you going to want a refugium inside the stand? You could do the auto top-off going into the refugium. Storage is always a great idea, and then it gets filled up with stuff. So start with lots of "storage" area for your future "stuff." By "stuff," I mean extra food, extra airline hose, turkey baster, extra scraper, more food, bits & bobs, etc.

If you're not sure about whether you want a refugium or not, you should probably try to check out a few people's tanks. See what they've done, how they hooked it up, what worked & what was an "opportunity" for improvement, etc. A refugium is a smaller tank (or tub or jug) where you can put different kinds of macroalgae to help manage all the excess nutrients in your system. The macroalgae are plants that will use nutrients, grow, then get fed to your fish. Depends on what fish you want. It is a quiet, low-flow area that will help your overall plan. Balance is hard to find at first, but a refugium really helps.

I'd leave a hole in the back of the stand for wires and things. Some stuff like pumps can sit on the floor, so you might put shelves in after you see how much room you've got. I have hooks inside the door for towels & nets & stuff. You'll always want a few towels. Fly in to the Ogden airport! Call me at 589-2591 and I can pick you up. All ya gotta do is give me some notice - a day or so. I usually teach class.

Yes, ask lots & lots of questions. Nothing is a silly question. Even if you're looking at a TINY little thing, wondering what it is or what it's for. We look at those, too. For instance, I just read Adam's new signature line. Then looked at my tank & counted 10 kinds of snails that I know of in there. Probably lots more that I haven't found yet. I only bought 2 kinds of snails.

So far I need a cal reator a refugium a top off tank an overflow a green water tank. A ton of storage and compartments to fit the afore mentioned.
What is everyone opinion on calc reactors, phosegaurd reactors and co2 reators?

Definitely use your membership list to call and go visit people.
I live in Bountiful right off the freeway and I don't have a skimmer or use a phos..reactor but even though my tank is right in the window(bright sun all morning), algae is under control because of the RDP Refugium and because plenty of snails and herbivorous fish and bugs can escape and survive the very few carnivores.
I do use Kalkwasser and have good growth of stony coral amid lush growth of soft coral, macroalgae, 3 small clams and a giant clam in a 75 gal connected to a 40 gal fraggin' tank.
And I saved a ton of $$ and helped conserve a wild reef by using Utah Oolitic sand and Utah LBTR (Lake Bonneville Tufa Rock)

Calcium reactor: depends on how many and what kind of corals you might want. Using Kalkwasser is popular, cheaper than a reactor, but has its pros and cons.

By the way, my above info on Calc. reactors will make more sense when you see some tanks. You'll get an idea of what soft and stony corals are, what it takes to make them happy, and a feel for the whole chemistry chain (calcium, alkalinity, pH, nitrites, nitrates, ammonia, salinity, specific gravity, etc.) It's an amazing obsession... I mean hobby!

Maybe not foot work. Brain work, and a steep learning curve as you set up your tank. Just think of all the fun new friends you have already!
