Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I had a 75 gallon saltwater tank set up 15 years ago and have decided to break it out and setit up again.  Back then I had under gravel filtration a few lava rocks and some dead yet colorful coral.  I had a small hang on filter along with a filter that went underneath the tank along with the infamous undergravel filtration.  The fish thrived well enough and had great color.  I never really had a reef tank and wonder if someone has a decent sump or filter I could set up underneath at a doable price that would get me going in that direction.  My lighting system consists of an Actinic, bluewave, grolux and some other regular white light all 48 ".  I figure to go to 2 blue waves and get rid of the white light of sorts for better color with the tank.  I figure this is the place to ask for assistance, I do have some great lace rock, mexican lava and other rocks ready to go in when I set up this time I just need some advice or am ready to see who might have a starter filter that will take my 75 gallons and make it a reef tank of sorts with whats available.  Your help appreciated

Have you read some of the tank build threads or looked in the buy-sell section for some of the things you're looking for? I would definetely look at switching to LR over lava rock.

Ditch the under gravel filter stuff. You will want to add sand either live sand or dead sand or you can add crushed coral. If you add dead sand you can get a cup of sand from an established tank to help seed yours. The live sand with live rock will be the tanks filter system. Def read up on some build threads to learn about some of the other equipment you'll need like power heads, skimmers, lights..stuff like that. Some people get people get by with using hang on the back style filters but if you can get your tank drilled and add a sump I think that would be your best option in the long run.   Good luck!

The hobby has come a long way in 15 years. I got into it in 1993 starting with an undergravel filter. That soon changed and I have tried to keep on the cutting edge of biological filtration ever since. An old expert in the hobby, Julian Sprung, has said that a tank can do fine without a lot of gadgets, such as a skimmer, but cannot survive without good biofiltration.

This link http://www.utahreefs.com/SeaStar/wmasSeaStar02Feb.pdf  to the Sea Star Newsletter has a lot of good articles that you may enjoy and the link below in my signature will help you get back into the hobby in a good way. Smile

Let me know if you want some Utah Sand and Utah Rock.
