 Topic: Fragging Acans?

I have recently been given a great opportunity to get VERY nice colonies of acans for a great deal. My one problem is I don't have a large enough tank or the money to buy some of the colonies. So my thought is why not get them in and frag them for the members of this site and spread the savings around?!?! Anyone interested in this? I will also post this in the buy-sell thread.
So has anyone here ever fragged acans before? How did it turn out, all acans live?
What method did you use? Hammer and chisel? Power tool? What were all the tools you used?
Any info would be greatly appreciated!ÂÂ

The acans are gorgeous. I will try to get some pics of some examples. The most I would be selling anything for is $15 a head and that is only for top notch stuff unless of course we all agreed we wanted to pay more for a colony. It is kind of cool how this guy works. I will post my story in another thread though.

I have fragged acans before. Though I used a primative method, everthing survived and continued to grow. The most important thing that I have found is to make sure you put the frags in high water flow after fragging them, this helps them heal and prevents them from getting diaseas. I think the easiet and most accurate way is to use a tile saw. Take the acan out of tank, and make sure the polyps retract, before you cut it.

I sugest a dremal with a diamond blade easier to cut where you want. The ultamate would be to get a small band saw with a diamond bland. you could cut around the polyp.

We use to have a Dremel but it has since disappeared. I found an article on Reef Central explaining how a guy does it and he just uses a hammer and chisel. He said he tried dremels and rotozips with no success. They took too long and got too hot.

I have frag a few acans and have done it a few different ways. It's really pretty simple. If you do have access to a diamond bladed band saw (wet) then that would be your best option. As others have said with a bandsaw you can just cut around each polyp, with less damage.
I personally use a dremel. It is quick and easy. when cutting with a dremel, you have a greater chance of damaging and loosing a polyp or two. However most do come back fairly quickly. I have also use the hammer and chisel trick before and I managed to almost destry an entire colony when the rock decided to shoot across the floor when I hit the chisel. So if you are going to do it that way make sure you have a way to hold on to the rock because they get slippery.

I went scavaging and found my Dremel buried deep in a box. So I just need to go pick up a diamond wheel now for it. I have been told to cut from the bottom then break the skeleton and cut the flesh.

Yep, that is correct. If your lucky after you cut the base, then when you get the the "flesh" it just comes appart, no cutting or tearing needed.

Be prepared to loss a few polyps. Especially on your first couple of attempts. Take that in account if you've presold the polyps. (Never pre sell all of them)

The way I frag acans is with a tile saw. If you can give us about a week we should have video's of fragging acans and other lps corals on the the IMAS web site.
