I posted this on RC but didn't get much help there so I'm wondering if you guys have the answer.

The other day I took shot of some zooanthids I bought a while ago (about 6 months or so) and compared them with pics that I took when I fist got them and they look drasiticly different. Now I know some of you are zooanthid guru's and could have the answer for me. Here are the pics-

When I first got them:

And now

The brightness of the pic is a little off on the second shot but you can tell a noticeable difference in there color, shape, and some are even mutating. What is going on here? For lighting I have 2 250W MH and 2 50w T5's. My orp is always around 400.

Is there something I can do to get them back or what and can I expect this to happen to my other more recently purchased zooanthids as well?

Thanks for your help.

They turned out the same as some that I got about 5 months ago.  Just like your first picture then some of them changed color and now have a gold mouth on them.  It looks like your picture some of yours also does too.  I just thought I would share that with you but mine are looking the same.  And Im willing to bet that you got them at Bird World the same place that I did.

They look like they are growing and are healthy otherwise.  I wouldn't worrry about them at all.  I sell zoas and when I see them in other people's tanks they always look different than they did in mine.  Differences in lighting, iodine and other supplements, type of salt that is used, flow, .... Lots of reasons.

Why bother with RC when you can get all the right answers here?Smile

Coral changes it's growth patterns and color when it is transferred into a different environment. Every tank is different and that causes the same coral to grow and look slightly different in each tank. You probably cannot get it to look like it did originally, but you can enjoy it just the same.

The fun comes when your tank is so healthy that you can bring home a struggling coral from the LFS or a another hobbyist and in your tank it turns around and does wonderfully.Big smile

As an example, green Sinularia gets all bushy in bright light but is long delicate and more fluorescent green in a less brightly lighted tank. Later I'll look for some pics to show you the difference.

I agree with everything said here.  I would say I prefer the color of the second pic.
