    Posted: October 09 2008 at 1:41am
I've been searching all over the internet for information on propagating crocea clams and I cant find anything useful. Does anyone know of a good site or book that would be helpful, or does anyone have any experience that they would like to share? I hear its quit difficult, but I would just like to at least further my knowledge of the subject.

As far as I can tell, only one person in the US claims to have raised any Crocea.  But that hasn't been shown.  It has been shown that you can spawn and fertilize them...

Adam,

That is a great article! I think it would be fun to learn how to do that and then have local hobbyists supply LFS's with the clams. They could get them much cheaper and pass the savings onto the public! Are you already doing that?

No, but that is the idea.  Clams can be raised in huge numbers (hundreds, even thousands).  Clam farms are thriving overseas.  However, this isn't being done in the US, yet.  But, I think it will happen.  I think one hobbyist out there will get it done, and they will supply hundreds of clams to the wholesale market.
But raising clams is still a showing some difficulties, even for top research facilities.

So what are the chances a local hobbyist can acheive this? I think it would be fun to do. Not a lot of space is needed and could be done in a basement? What kinf of problems do you run into with raising? Is it food, water quality, or unknown factors at this point?

i think the difficulty's lie in water quality and the amount of cal you need to build the shell

I remember reading somewhere about a farm that raised clams. apparently when they are young they are in really high ammonia water for growth.

I don't really want to try it myself, at least not at this point in time.

Really, I just want to know where/when I can buy a "Blundell Bivalve" © !
