Pregnant Peppermint Shrimp

Hi all,

We have two Peppermint Shrimp, purchased recently to combat some Aiptasia on a piece of live rock (also purchased recently.)  When we bought the shrimp, the girl at the LFS said "Oh, by the way, one of them is carrying eggs."  Sure enough, you can see the eggs in her tail.  What is the normal behavior for pregnant Peppermints?  How many will she lay and, what are the chances for any of them hatching and living, considering we have a bunch of hermit crabs.

It seems like my peppermint females lay eggs every few weeks. They will likely hatch and then either be swept into your overflows or become fish food. I just figure it's free fish food and gives them a little diversity in their diet. Never seen them hatch though. The females just show up one day without the eggs.

There is a ton of info out there about breeding and raising them, but not in a community tank. A couple WMAS members, Joe and Cindy Jones, have raised PS commercially.

Every once in a while when I come into work at night, I get a flash light to look in the aquarium and I can see hundreds and hundreds of larve swimming around everywhere in the water.  It is awesome.  But they are always food because when I come in the next day there is no trace of a single swimmer.

Maybe if you scoop out some of the larve after they hatch and put them in the refugium they will live a little longer.  I don't have a refugium yet or else I would have tryed it.
