Topic: Phyto / Rotifers Attempt # 1 Posted: April 20 2004 at 9:56pm |
I put together a phyto and rotifers culture station. Please take a look (Suzy) and give me any feed back you may have. I believe the phyto is nannochloropsis. (got it from Mark) Do I want to keep the rotifers in front of the light? I have read conflicting opinions on this. I plan to add three additional 3 liter rotifer bottles to my set up. (green water on the left, rotifers on the right)
To maximize space, I ran the light tubes between the bottles. My wife is convinced this is a spill waiting to happen. For the time being, I've convinced myself that the kids will stay out of the storage room.

I don't really have anything constructive to add... But I think the set up looks very nice and organized!
... daddy, Jimmy's drinking all the green punch in the storage room and he won't share with me

In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth ... then He let it cycle. Have you read my dinosaur theory yet?

Hey - I need rotifers!!!!!
Adam is right - I have too much green! If anyone wants to donate/sell/trade me some I'd be much obliged.
Also, I saw a great rotifer grow out container at Sam's club. They sell a great big tub o'cheese balls. It is made of plastic and has to hold about three gallons. The whole family is gonna have orange fingers this weekend.

Two of those containers are what I call my "jugs". They are in my window. One is a freshwater planted jug (thanks to Chem Guy) and one is a nano reef jug! The nano is where I keep growing algae and giving it away. I just added another small clam to see how fast it would clear up the phytoplankton compared to using rotifers.

Good idea Richard!
Update: Thanks to Suzy's rotifers (that I got from Mark) I grew and fed my first batch of rotifers over the weekend. I added about 1/2 gallon to my previous rotifer culture on Friday night. By Sunday a.m. the green had turned yellow and by Sunday p.m. the yellow had lightened significantly. I strained the rotifers through a coffee filter and rinsed it into my tank. The fish went crazy!
I wonder how long I can keep the rotifer batches going????

Shanepj,
You might try two things, (1) contact Suzy on this board, (2) http://www.sjwilson.net/reef/phytosteps.html
Good luck, this is way easy!
