I have a sick A. Ocellaris.  It's my female.  She was really swollen early yesterday and having problems swimming, later that day she was no longer swollen, and actually appeared very frail--still not able to swim well.  She seems to have lost all of her bouyancy.  Do clowns have air bladders, and can they recover from the loss of one?

So if yes, and yes, what are the chances of a recovery?  Slim to none, or maybe a glimmer of hope for the poor fish?

Very bad chances, but it is possible.  Sorry I can't think of anything more useful to say.

Just what I figured, and not suprising.  She seems to be getting worse daily so I don't have any high hopes for her.

Maybe someone makes little water wings for fish? What? They make those little wheels to put on the back of dogs!

Well, the A.Ocellaris died yesterday--I didn't see it, but I saw bristle worms trying to get a hold of it before it was even on the sand.  I managed to get my wife out of the house before she made me take it out (she also makes me seperate the hermit crabs when they are trying to eat each other...).  When we came home about 10 last night there was no sign of the fish.  Wife was upset because the worms had eaten her, but I already knew that was going to happen.  However, I have a new question:  How soon do I need to buy a new clown to pair them up again before the one left decides to go female?

I would buy another one very soon, if you think everything is cool with your tank.  I just think that they're happier in pairs.  That doesn't answer your question about how soon the other will go female.

Somewhat on the same subject. I have two Ocellaris clowns. One is eating fine but I haven't seen the other one eat in days. It will sometimes go up and up brine shrimp in its mouth but then it spits it out again and swims away. I've seen other clowns do this and after a few days they die. Is there anything that I can do it help it decide to eat?

Bhaight - are you only feeding brine? You might want switch it up a bit... mysis, etc. My clowns were very picky early on and I had to go through a few things to get them to eat regularly. Now they eat anything like pigs .

Nate - I may be wrong but I believe that clowns will only go female when you have two, the more dominant one becomes the female. I think if you only have one it stays male...

Sorry Shane not to correct you but they always change to female (almost always) unless they are paired with a female.  This is what makes pairing them difficult, it is hard to get a young fish that is still male.  I tried to pair my tomato for years.  I tried about 4 other tomatoes but couldn't ever get one smaller than the fish I already had.
On the other subject I completely agree with Shane.  I would try different foods.  I'm starting to really like the cylops shrimp.  Try them.

So far I've tried the brine, flake, and mysis. I'll look for some cyclops shrimp. Thanks all.

That I don't know.  I'll have to look it up.  I want to say a few weeks time alone would do it.  Jake may be able to answer that as well.  He has read quite a bit on clowns, and all the rest of the anemonefishes, so maybe he knows.

Find a big female right away. They will pair up instantly with
no probs. Bird world has one, and I have one.   Heck I have
everything. You want to try a black Ocellaris pair? I have 2
pairs of them. A pair is hard to get.
How about a pair of Black saddleback clowns. TRUE
PERCS? Got a pair of them too. Black Clarkii? (lots of them)
I have too many fish. Maybe I will have fish for dinner. I will
need a big pan. HERE FISHY FISHY

JimL,
I hope you are coming to the meeting. It would be great to meet you. I like your sense of humor too. If I had room for a pair of Anemonefishes from the Great Barrier Reef, would you have any, and how much $ would they be?

Mark

Never even seen those except in books.  They are ugly anyway.  What I have been surprised to find so beautiful are the black saddleback clowns.  Not the brown, but the black.  I would love to have a spawning pair of those.  I will be at the meeting.  so.. see you there

I've looked at a couple of places for cyclops shrimp but haven't had any luck. Where do you guys get it from?
