Topic: Feather Dusters Posted: February 09 2004 at 12:47pm |
Hi, Guys! Has anybody had any luck with these creatures? I've only
tried them once before, and it wasn't a long association. So today I'm
hanging out with my buddy Brad (I told myself not to look at the
corals, I can't resist his stuff, there's always something! ), getting
some misc stuff, and there was the coolest yellow-green feather
duster! So, it's in the basement.....
Do I just stick it in the tank? Or do I bury it? Or will it dig itself in?
Does it like shade? Do I target feed it?
Thanks ahead of time, if anybody has these cool creatures!

I just placed mine on or in my LR...they do attach. I do not do anything special with mine as far as feed or shade and all three are doing quite well!

We have Two large brown/white. Largest, about 5" crown has been in for about seven months. We also have a yellow-green one, about 2.5" crown in for about five months. Light, curent, and feeding is seemingly unimportant. We don not target feed. We propped them in the live rock until they attached. All three have added significantly to their tubes. We also had a purple one that lasted about two months- do not know what happened to that one. It was sure pretty. Last week the Yellow-Green had two tentacles on one side and two on the other side that were clipped about halfway. Do not know what did that either . . .

IME,
Feather dusters are very hardy, inexpensive, and one of the most beautiful invertebrates that you can keep. I highly recommend them to even moderately experienced to brand new reefers.
I simply slide the "back end" of the tube between two rocks or into the sand. They attach very quickly on their own. I do not target feed.
Occassionally, mine will lose its crown. I don't know if it gets harrassed or what. It quickly grows another and everything is happy again.

Suzy I just wanted to let you know that the feather duster I have has done well for over a year. I do not target feed. I had it in my 5 gallon work tank and then moved it to my 125. If it looses its crown dont give up on it. They do grow back. Let me know how yours does.

I have three in my 20 gal tank. I had originally put two of them in my 150 but my big yellow tang wanted to crag them around and shove them into the back of the tank. Anyway, I moved them to the smaller one and one is doing fine. I haven't see the crown on the larager one for some time now, but I thought I'd leave it for a while to see what happens. Maybe it is growing inside and not really dead as a fear. They are really beautiful.

I have 2 large ones in my tank at work. They have done great and have grown a lot. I burried mine about halfway down in the substrate and they seem to have burried themselves even further.
Another warning about yellow tangs though, My yellow like to pick at their tubes. It killed one I'd had for several months. I think that is why the other 2 buried themselves further in the sand.

Suzy, where did you get that yellow one? And what's the story about the crab in the picture?
I had two feather dusters in my tank until yesterday. One crawled out of his tube (I watched him do it too!), then moved into some live rock. I haven't seen him since.

My buddy Rick at the Aquarium caught both of them! We've got
some bubble algae in the reef.....I think it's kinda cool, but I don't
want it to get outta control (just in case Marcus ever comes over! I
think he hates bubble algae...)

My long lost and feared dead feather duster pushed up it's pretty
little head again the other day. It is much smaller than it used
to be but still there. I hope it growns longer again.
I was glad to see it .

If it comes back smaller that means it used up energy to reappear and the fact that it disappeared in the first place means it isn't happy there and/or isn't getting enough food. Are you feeding pulverized frozen food as you feed your fish. Simply pulverizing a portion of what you feed the fish will feed the inverts(coral, worms, crabs, etc.) A supplemental daily feeding of pulverized food will boost growth. Either target feed ot place the food in a part of the current that flows past the organisms.
