My pocillopora is opened at the top just like normal, but at the base it looks like the skeleton.  There is no polyp extension at the bottom and its just white with holes.  This just happened yesterday evening and at first I just thought a crab had bumped into it but now I realize its something more.  Any thoughts on why this would happen?  Whats the chances it will survive?

Perhaps I would be better at basket weaving. . . at least it would be cheaper!

Here is a pic from less than two weeks ago, before the problem.  I dont have my camera right now so I can't post a new one.  The part that has turned white is the base where it sits down in the rocks.  Do you think its just because that part doesn't really get any flow?

It may be rtn-ing (rapid tissue nucrosis) and if it keeps going up, you should frag it before you lose it.

Keep a close eye on it and if it continues to move up, then frag off the good portions that have no white on it.

Okay, sounds like a plan! So what causes this to happen?  Is it something that I'm doing wrong or does it just happen sometimes?

It just happens sometimes. Sometimes they become stressed due to heat or other things that start it going. I had a Coral Beauty Angel that ate one of mine.

Well, I fragged it, but I don't know if it will pull through or not.  It was just a 2" frag anyway so the piece I saved is really small, maybe 1/2".  I'll let yall know.  Thanks guys!

Watching rtn on a sps coral is no fun. It moves really fast and I think you made the right decision fragging it. There was probably no hope for it at all if you didn't act now.  At least now it has a small chance.
