Topic: Frags from the meeting Posted: January 10 2004 at 1:10pm |
I am curious how everyones birds nest did from the meeting. I may have gotten a bad cutting or something because I have never seen a coral die that fast. I woke up in the moring and all the polyps were peeling off.
Maybe if anyone has a good peice they would frag it for me later when it grows.

I think the frags were cut too small. But Bird's Nest is a hard one anyway.

Mine is almost completely dead over night. The hermits are finishing off whatever is left.
I just noticed something very strange. The other acro frag I got had skin peeling off it last night. this morning I noticed one of my ocelaris picking on it and eatng the polyps that are peeling off I took some pics. Looks like both these frags will end up dead. Click on the Clown_eating pics. For some reason the direct link doesnt work

When I got my birds nest home last night, I noticed that it smelled REALLY bad. I also noticed some dark areas on the base and on one of the tips. I cut off all of the bad areas, just in case they were decaying and causing the smell. I added the small remaining piece to my aquarium, but now the polyps appear to be peeling off in one area. I'm not very hopeful.
I also got a frag of the pink star polyps, but I'm worried that they may be dead. In my experience, star polyps open up very easily under the lights. I know that they were out of the water quite a while while they were being glued, but I had hoped they would be okay. Not one single polyp opened even partially today and they look kind of slimy.
Did anyone else get a frag of the pink star polyps? I'm interested in how they're doing for you.

Mine are still doing good. It is hard to get large cutting from a birds nest because of the way they grow.

I attended the meeting for only about 10 mins because of this every thing. The frags were so small that I just was not interested. I was under the impression that people took stuff they wanted to trade or sell and then you could also buy frags but what they have at the meetings are way to small for me. Id like to have the option to pay more get more. Did I miss something? Was there a place that people set up there stuff other then in the fragging room. I have several really nice peices but they are of the same thing. I thought it would be fun to see what others had & to trade for new stuff.. I was so set on getting nice new peices I ended up at the Aquarium and drop 250.00. Speaking of that, Has anyone ever contacted the local LFS to see if they would like to bring stuff in to sell ?? If I owned a store Id be there with bells on and offer great doscounts to keep them coming back.... Im a newbie so maybe this has all been said before. Just wondering....

Most stores don't care to come sell items.... but if you were at our last Swap Meet. OMG it was like having a store right there for half off. I have no idea how Jake and how Kirk were able to transport all that.

I got two frags of bird's nest. One of them was dead by morning, the other is still alive, but not looking very good. Hopefully it'll pull through.

Reefobsessed, I agree that a coral swap is a cool thing and as adam said that's what the swap meet was. tons of stuff to buy, tons of stuff just given away, amazing deals on EVERYTHING. Corals were brought, traded, sold. Anyway, I love the frag seminar because that's what it's about FRAGS. Personally I like the opportunity to try out bits of different coral to see what will do well in my tank in different positions without much financial investment. Not all of us can flip $250.00 at the Aquarium just to satisfy a yen (If only I hadn't not bought that lottery ticket in ohio, I should sue). Besides my favorite corals in my tank are the ones I've grown out myself because I can point them out to friends and family and say "looky what I can do!"
Although you make a good point that maybe some frags could be offered double or triple size for two, three tickets or whatever. Understandably, the bird's nest was in high demand, but maybe 76 small frags 12 med. would be cool.

Reefobsessed, you didn't bring the rock! Did you see the two examples of rock that I brought? I was hoping you would tell me whether yours looked anything like those pieces.
Maybe it isn't clear enough sometimes but the Meeting is supposed to come across as a way to see how different coral is propagated and to maybe take home a piece like Chrisslc said above. The WMAS's mission is to learn from, and socialize with other reef obsessed people.
I hope you come again next mtg. and stay longer.

We got 3 frags of the bird's nest, and none of them made it. They peeled, but we're totally new to this. Should I pull these pieces out of my tank? Is there any hope that they will revive? I got a purplish/burgundy gargonia from the guy taking tickets. I think his name was Mark. I got it home and it's very happy. Thank you so very much! I would have been bummed if all the frags died. How often does the club do swaps? I have some gorgeous shells of different kinds, and being new to the hobby means that we've just spent $5,000 or so on things. So I'd love to trade substrate and/or shells and/or coral... whatever.

My two pieces of birdsnest that I bought from the meeting died right off too . And I can definetly say it was not because they were fragged too small! I bought a very small piece from kirk from the same coral months ago and its doing fine.

Weimers - you can take it out or leave it in. If all the tissue came off, then its dead and it won't come back. Some people like that look, I don't. The Presidency can correct me but I think Coral Cutting Seminars are twice a year.
cpearce - I am interested in why you feel that yours died if it was not from the size.

I got a piece and it died over night as well. I'm not sure why, but I'm not to worried everything else is fine and it looks like I'm not the only one with such luck.
