Topic: North Davis/ South Weber County Skimmate Posted: June 24 2015 at 9:25am |
Looking for some free skimmate to jump start my cycle on my new fish tank. If you have some to spare and are close to me. I would be grateful. Send me a pm or a text if you can help me out. 8016756798

Are we being punk'd? I have never heard of using skimmate to cycle a tank before. Can someone explain?

A cycle in a nut shell is building an ammonia spike with fish waste right? So instead of waiting for something to decompose just go straight for the source.

Skimmate contains a large amount of Hydrogen Sulfide (the smell that comes from it) that is not normally something we want in our systems. There is actually very little ammonia in skimmate. If you want to go to the source then why not use the bottled ammonia (not the household products) and just add it to the system?

I just grabbed a $4 bottle of ammonia from the hardware store. No surfactants or scent. I got mine at Riverton Hardware, the big box stores only had the soap filled stuff. I hear ACE has the right stuff. Or you could get the little bottle from Dr. Tim's that has the pure ammonia at a known concentration. I had to dose and test a few times to get the amounts right.

Here's a thought -
Why not just get a cup of live sand from another hobbyist tank, 20 or so pounds of live rock off of someone selling it off the board, and a nice sprig of macro-algae...
And not have to deal with a cycle AT ALL..!
Cycling a tank so "1990s"... Just saying

The only ammonia I was aware you could purchase was the cleaning kind. Maybe I'll just go with a sacrificial damsel. I got all the rock and sand I want and don't really want to mix rock and sand.

skip the sacrificial damsel and get a sacraficial already dead raw shrimp from your neighborhood grocery store. No need to kill a fish for a cycle.

Please don't torture a fish to cycle a tank. I'll give you enough ammonia if you really don't want to buy some. It's intended for cleaning, but has no soap in it.
Or you could just buy this and know you have the right thing...
http://www.amazon.com/DrTims-Aquatics-Ammonium-chloride-bottle/dp/B006MP4QG6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1435177822&sr=8-1&keywords=dr+tim+ammonia
I hear the bottled bacteria is very good as well.

I know The Aquarium in Sandy stocks the bacteria. I don't know if they also have the ammonia drops though.

If you're really thinking about putting a live fish in the tank for the cycle, stop, slap yourself. And then take a pee in the tank.

Cost is not the issue. Its an animal that is living. There have been many alternative examples suggested for you to use. A raw shrimp is a few pennies.

Well I read that I can use frozen fish food. So everyone (Marcoss) can relax and sleep soundly that no Damsel will be sacrificed on this night.

Yes, this is worrisome. Get some sand and rock from someone nearby.

I'm pretty sure the reason why using a Damsel to cycle a tank has lost its popularity is because 9/10 of the time the Damsel lives. And those mean little bugger are nearly impossible to catch.
Who here hasn't said at one time or another, "If I ever catch that @#$%! Damsel, I'm going to KILL IT!!!"?

If you want skimmate...come over...but you don't.
You also don't want a damsel. It'll live and torture you. If it doesn't survive, then you intentionally killed a fish.
If you don't want to add even a cup of someone else's sand to your system, then why do you want skimmate? Skimmate probably has all the bad with no good.
Just use some household ammonia (I have some), a frozen raw shrimp, or some other source of decay. Add some sort of bacteria (live rock, sand, or bacteria in a bottle.)
There you go...cheap, ethical, and safe.
