Topic: Info to start a seahorse tank Posted: December 18 2010 at 10:32pm |
Ever since my wife saw Nicks Seahorse tank, she's wanted one. So I am going to try it out. I bought a 29 gal cube from a friend, but I need to know what will be different for a seahorse tank vs. a reef tank. I need to make sure the 29 gal is ready, right now I have two red bubble tip anemoe's in it along with a bunch of good Amphiods running around. I will remove the aneomoes and put them in my big tank, but I need to know more. I don't know what to ask yet, so any info will be great. The only thing I know I need to do is have less current, I think. Anyway, any help I can get or a lead to a web page that will give me the info will be great.
Thanks

A few quick points: - moderate flow but not a strong narrow jet stream
- an exterior basket around the powerhead intakes to keep a Seahorse from grabbing ahold and not being able to move away. (if interested, ask me to post a pic)
- hitching posts of all types, including soft coral like Gorgonia and Finger Leathers. - many types of macroalgae for hitching posts and water filtration - contact Suzy for more helpful ideas about care and breeding http://www.suzysreef.com/

Thank you. Keep it comming. I've read that hermit crabs, and shrimp are also a no go. So I guess my big tank is going to get a boost in the cleanup crew. I have a few emerald crabs in the the nano and was wondering if they need to come out also?

You're on the right track. Keep the flow low. The stock pump is sufficent for once. Also add plenty of "hitching posts" in the form of various macro algaes. This will also help keep nitrates from all that extra food you're gonna need to throw in there. If you do want to do corals, keep them all soft corals. LPS can sting and SPS will scratch (also Biocube can't keep SPS happy). Finally do all the mods necessary on your cube to maxamize it's filtration capabilities. Make a fuge outof the back or swap the bioballs for LR ect. You'll find hundreds of ideas with a little searching online. Last word of advice, obtain Tank Raised ponies they have waaay higher surivival rate. Fish 4 U has them almost all the time

The emerald crab should be fine.... atleast I never had a problem with them. Shrimp are bad because that is what horses eat :) Just keep in mind...they will wrap their tails around anything and are slow eaters so make sure anything that is in there will not harm them. I would start out with tank raised like Pinner said. Otherwise you will be feeding live food and that can be a pain. Macro is very necessary..besides they wont eat it so you can get all different kinds..... Seahorse tanks can be some of the prettiest. Oh and leave some open areas preferably towards the front of the tank. If you by chance end up with two that mate up the dance they do in the mornings is amazing.

Gregory, you are absolutely right. My wife just got out of bed and said the same thing. Hello, my name is Mark and I'm a reefaholic... On my honor, I haven't eaten a fish for uhh....

Thanks guys, I am taking all this info along with what I can google. This tank is kind of a gift for my wife since she is facinated with Seahorse. She doesn't take care of the tanks, but she will let me know if something doesn't look right. She will watch the tank for hours. If I do not do this right, she will not let me live it down. Well, she isn't that bad, but I do feel that way if I mess up. We have been together for over 34 years and keepin her happy has always been my first goal. So keep giving me what info you have and hopefuly when I get it situated, I can post a picture of the finished project.
