Topic: Saddest Day of our lives & the wost day ever Posted: July 13 2008 at 1:01pm |
My family has been out visiting for the past week. We've been really busy with the new house we bought, and running around doing the tourist thing. Well yesterday we decided to go the Grand Canyon. Left at about 9am, and got back at about 7pm. We came home to the power off. Apparently our main house breaker went bad and completely blew out. Upon getting it back on it seems i blew pretty much right after we walked out the door. All we saw was dead fish everywhere. To be exact 60 dead fish. 12 inch naso with streamers, achilles tang, dussimier tang... my blue eye kole tang. all my wrasses... We pretty much both immedietly bawled. Than, to add insult to injury we had to pull all the dead fish from the tanks. Pretty painstaking task. The corals appear to all be fine. We spent most of the night cleaning and just starting to move all the tanks as they are going to need 50% water changes. The bright side is our clownfish pretty much all made it, and one lone tang... my 7 inch orange shoulder that I've had since a 2 inch fish. Some of these fish we have had for over five years, and some were over 20 years which we know because we got them from other peoples tanks....... They were are pets, and are sadly missed. I had a 10 inch sailfin that loved for you to pet her down the side of her body. We are not getting out of the hobby, but are very beaten down at this point. We probably wont be replacing the fish until the new tank is set up, but we might not be able to wait that long. Losing easily 5K in fish isnt easy for anyone. Especially when they were your pets.
Survivors included:
Orange Shoulder Tang.
Pair of Cinnamons
2 pairs of occelaris
my 15 year old pair of maroon clowns.. just barely
2 bangaiis
1 true perc. her mate was lost
and my clowns that were in seperate smaller tanks
pair of maroons
pair of true percs
pair of clarkiis
This is the most disgusting picture i've ever had to take.

That is terrible. I am so sorry for your loss. It hurts to lose even one. To lose so many at once is so heartbreaking.

they basically died from lack of oxygen. With no circulation the oxygen depleted very quickly causing the fish to suffocate. They make back up air bubblers that you plug into the wall. When it stops getting electricity it flips a switch to run a battery powered air bubbler. We will be investing in a few of those with the new tank along with a controller that will send text/email alerts when something goes wrong.

Crystal and Kyle, I am very saddened by your loss. If there is anything that I can do to help, please let me know. Here are a few suggestions:
1. Place the tank close to a window which provides light to produce O2 to keep them going. I believe my tank could survive for days without power, but the 100+ degree heat of the summer would kill it as the house heated up in a few days.
2. Ensure some macroalgae in the sunlit tank, in a caged area if necessary, to provide better oxegenation.
3. Connect a powerhead to a Universal Power Supply. This powerhead would be set to push water along the top or up to the top of the tank to maximize it's air-water exchange effectiveness.
4. Be cautious about the number of fish. It's cool to have a lot of pets, but each fish places additional demand on the Oxygen supply.
5. I don't know why I'm saying this next one, I'm sure many people will take objection, but I have a strong feeling that a sand bed acts in a positive way to ensure the survivability of a system during a power outage. I can't say why, it's just a gut feeling. I have a lot of trust in the sand beds I've had over the years. I can't remember ever losing fish to a power outage in my tanks or those I've set up for others. Perhaps some thought and discussion will shed some light.
Again, I feel for your loss and offer my condolences.

all the tanks died. even the ones in sunlight.. which were two of them with sandbeds. the one without the sandbed didnt have any light. the other two were next to a window. It's a lesson learned. We will have battery powered backup pumps in the future. :(

I'm very sad for you Crystal. Ive had losses in the past but nothing as large as that. Something to think about with your new system would be an automatic generator. Ive got a generator but the chances are the power will fail when I'm not around to start it up. Ive been looking at the home centers and the prices are not to bad on the smaller systems.

This is a sad day indeed. You will get through it, but it will take time to heal. It goes to show how fragile our little oceans are and how dependant our fish are to us. Its very hard to leave our tanks for any period of time, but like lockdown said above, it always seems to happen when we leave for a period of time.

thanks for the support guys, Looks like all the corals are pulling through alright. Four more tanks to move A whole house generator is #1 on my list right now, unfortunately the 5k pricetag is going to take a while to save up for.... This is a huge setback as we won't have the money to replace these guys for quite some time, but like crystal mentioned at least we still have our clowns, the only one we lost was our onyx percula male..... And on a side note yesterday when this all happened one of our recent pairs spawned for the first time, so thats three active spawning pairs hopefully in about six months they'll help us out raising money for the new tank..... If anyone has tangs that are getting too large for your tank in the next few months please let us know. thanks kyle

Terrible photo.....I get scared everyday that I'm away from my tank for more than six hours. After seeing this, I am going to hook up my two backup battery's for my modded MJ's right now. I have been procrastinating it for about three months now and all it takes is five minutes. I will be on the lookout at the store for anyone trying to rid their tank of beautiful and oversized fish. I know this is a devastating blow, and being financially strained doesn't help out at all. Good luck with everything, you guys are my idols for a happy healthy fish loving couple.

I am so sorry to hear about this. Believe me, I know how you feel. I posted a similar photo a couple of years ago.
Take it slow and look into a back up generator for sure. With the new, huge tank it will certainly be money well spent.
Good luck!
