Topic: Reef Safe? Posted: April 09 2007 at 5:09pm |
So here is the question for the day, is there such thing as a reef safe puffer? How about a reef safe trigger? If so what kind, and how large of a tank do they require?
Thanks,
Tim

I've Never had a puffer that worked out. I've heard that figure 8 puffers might work. I've had good luck with Niger triggers, Blue throat and Pink tails. I would say a minimum of a 125g if you plan on keeping them when they get big.

I'm glad someone asked this question, I really like these fish and lionfish, but I like my coral much more! I wish we could keep them in a reef. Is it really the coral that they eat or is it the cleaner shrimp, crabs, etc.?

Perhaps I would be better at basket weaving. . . at least it would be cheaper!

I've never had one but I believe they eat clams, shrimp & squid. They might pick on other fish and their teeth grow pretty fast if they are not wearing them down on the food they eat. I believe they are okay with corals.

Lionfish and Puffers are both reef safe, at least in terms of corals.

I moved a leather into my tank with a stars and stripes puffer. It didn't take him 30 seconds to take a great big bite out of it.

I've seen Niger and Blue Cheeked Triggers in reef tanks. I think the key is to keep them fat and happy! I'm not sure about puffers, I think they just like going after shrimp and snails for than corals. But then again there's always the exception to the rule as Ed Taylor pointed out.

Hmmm, well I don't have tank that is large enough for any of the triggers yet... how about a Saddle Valentini Puffer? From what I've ready they will do fine in a 29 gal, and depending on the site, some say they're reef safe, others say they aren't. Adam mentioned that they won't eat corals, would one of these eat my fire shrimp, emerald or strawberry crab, or harass my other fish?
Anyone have experience with this specific puffer?

well it doesn't look like I'll be getting a puffer anytime soon, well at least not until I get another tank... Looks like it's time I petition tank #3 to the misses

Puffers and triggers love crustaceans, and snails, and starfish, and clams. Those are the things that make them NOT reef-safe. I don't recall hearing of them eating corals.

I have seen many reef displays containing small triggers - I don't recall many with puffers. Housing corals with these fish should be ok, but shrimp and clams will certainly be at risk.
I like the looks of an "aggressive" tank including large soft corals and anemones. You can also keep many types of macro algae that would quickly be consumed by the inhabitants of a typical reef display tank.

Well, one of these days I'd love to have two tanks, a reef tank and an aggressive tank. First I need to find a better job, and buy a house though... Speaking of jobs, anyone in Utah county looking for someone with degree's and experience in both Advertising and Film?

So what about dwarf lionfish? They don't look like they could really eat a cleaner shrimp, but their mouths could be bigger than it looks I guess. So do aggressive tanks not have a cleanup crew? I would really like to get a dwarf lionfish, right now all I have is 2 maroon clowns and a saifin tang, I think it would get along ok with them. Does anyone have experience with dwarf lionfish and reefs?

I have a dwarf lion with soft corals, two small clowns, rabbitfish, cardinals, dwarf angel, six line and snails and hermits. I haven't had any problems, but I haven't tried putting a shrimp in with him. I actually tried a ghost shrimp once, just to see if he would eat it immediately; and yes, he did in about 5 seconds. Since then, I have not tried any other shrimp.
