Topic: Fluval Edge Marine Conversion Posted: May 23 2012 at 8:49am |
I picked up one of the new model Fluval Edge 6 Gallon Tanks on clearance yesterday. I am still not sure why it was on clearance, but for $95 I figured I would give it a try. The main upgrade on this model over the previous, is a 21 bulb LED set up. At 7600k I do not think that the LED's would be able to do much more than wake the fish up in the morning, but maybe it will be easier to upgrade the lighting now that it comes with some form of LED from the start. I probably wont run a protein skimmer, but will do weekly water changes. I think a gallon a week should keep the tank running well. Here are the new Edge specs: - Powerful and efficient 21 LED lighting system
- 7600K high luminosity LEDs, suitable for aquatic plants
- 3 Position On/Off switch: Bright Daytime, Deep Blue Nighttime and Off
- Low Voltage Power Supply Increases Safety
- Sealed glass top provides spectacular high definition viewing and reduces evaporation for less maintenance
- Powerful easy to use EDGE filter with CycleGuard and 3 stage filtration to ensure clear water and a healthy environment
- 2 year warranty
I will unpack it later today/ or this evening and snap some photos. I need to do some research, but my plans are to: - Upgrade LED System
- Auto Top off System
- Possibly go rimless
- Convert filtration system
As for what will live in this tank? No idea yet.
I have never tried a nano tank, so please nano gods, help me out on this one.

Alright, so I got it unpacked and set up on my desk. I am kind of wondering if it would be better to set this up as a planted freshwater tank and just have a beta fish live in it maybe?

I've had one for about a year now. Has a helfrichi firefish, small clown and blk/white damsel. Clean up crew, 3 head frogspawn, fuzzy mushrooms, 3 heads of candy came, 5 headed sun coral and some palys. I do weekly water changes and change carbon every other week. I bought some mr 11 leds of ebay and it improved the color of the tank incredibly. However they did not increase the brightness of the tank and did not have splash guards so they burned out quickly. I have put the factory halogen lights back in until I can duque something out ( mine is the older model, didnt come with led ). I would love to have someone build a custom led in the canopy of the tank. I will post pics tonight. I love the tank, minus cleaning. With the live rock I have it's hard to get in the small opening to clean.

Thanks for the info Chuck. I got your PM as well. I will let you know if I go that route.
I am thinking of maybe putting 5 lbs of sand in, then just three rocks. No caves or anything like that.
Then just some LPS and keep it simple. I am still not 100% decided though. I would like to start the tank dry though because I think access to the tank may be near impossible. So I dont want to chance any flat worms etc.

That light is definitely for a planted fresh water. Upgrade the light and have fun.

Thanks Dion. I am looking at ways to upgrade the fixture/ replace it. I am thinking of just doing a Par30 bulb and removing the top mesh portion of the cover, but I need the correct lamp to fit the style etc. Water finally cleared up (once I changed the sand). Hydrometer wont stick to the side as you can see. But I will just bring my refract to work and leave it there. I dont have much variation in the salinity at home. Here is how the rock work will remain:

That tank is cool. Did you get your lights yet? I put a purple firefish in my tank on Monday. Her name is "Eye Shadow." So far she has been doing really well. I like how she moves about the tank, hides at night, and waits for the lights in the morning. I also added a pom pom crab, but who knows when i ll see it again.

I bought an ORA Black Ice Clown for the tank today. So now I am all done with livestock. Once I get the upgraded LED's I will start adding some corals.

So here is the tank with the new light pics. It's hard to get good pictures with the brightness of the LED's. Everything remains stock. We fastened the new lights to the exsiting light bar. He ended up doing a 9 watt, 6 blue + 3 white configuration. I love the color. I've got some sps I'm going to put it soon and see how it does. I beleive this is enough light to grow whatever I want. The light still does not cast all the way out to the sides of the tank, but does reach the front. I am running them with no lenses as I did not like the look of the tank with the lenses. I hope you like. I'll be picking up my other stuff shortly as I just had back surgery on the 7th and am recovering. Very nicely I might add !
