Topic: Cany Coral Odd growth Posted: February 20 2005 at 6:27pm |
bugzme inspired me to ask this question. My candy coral has been growing well, but I have noticed on two of the polyps an odd growth on the outer ring. It almost looks like a growth of sorts. It is raised and lighter in color. This started several days ago and just recently one of them no longer has this growth. Any idea what it might be?

My candy coral develop those all the time. I havn't given it much thought, but they often appear to by air bubble under the coral flesh. I believe this is unlikely, but I havn't poked one to see. I will next time.

Shane, last night I thought I would poke at it and see if your theory was correct. Low and behold it was an air bubble. As I briefly poked at it an air bubble was expelled through the oral opening. Thanks for the info. Also have you seen any ill affects from these air bubbles? I wonder how they form and what their affect might be on the coral.

kewl!
I've never noticed anything detrimental associated with these "bubbles". They come and go regularly. I'm glad you poked one to check it out. Did only gas escape or was there other substance as well?
It must be fairly normal if it is occurring in both our tanks.
Anyone else notice these bubbles on their candy coral?

I only noticed air being expelled. Also I thought it might be caused by air bubbles in the water, but it is not uncommon for me to have air bubble in the water as I use a surface skimmer. However, I have not noticed this behavior until recently, so I don't know if that is the cause or not.

I wonder if lighting has an affect on this. My VHO lights were old (+2yrs) and I replaced them recently. A few weeks after that is when I noticed the bubbles forming on the coral. Any thoughts if that might be a cause?
