getting ready to get the sump plans finalized... I'm just contemplating, is it better for the flow to go past rock before sand/chaeto? or the other way around? (sand/chaeto then rock).

Any benefits either way? or does it really matter?

I don't think it really matters too much. I have all three of mine in the same compartment and it works great. The chaeto blocks most of the light from reaching the rock creating a cryptic zone, and the bugs have tons of real estate to hide in between the macro and the rocks.

I agree, it doesn't matter much.
I believe that LR in the Refugium has little value. It can do the same job in the display where it can be seen. From what I have seen and experienced, a more open sand bed with water flow unobstructed and sand uncovered, in the Display and/or Refugium does a better job.

Thanks for all the input, didn't really think it mattered too much, I am however keeping the rock (rubble mostly) and sand separate in the fuge.  Mainly so they're live little pieces for frags that aren't buried in sand! Not really a fan of the frag on a plug look.  Just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything.

I'm thinking maybe the rock first personally as it gives more 'pockets' to catch bigger particles, the chaeto will float above both sections of rock and sand to help filter as well.  Hopefully too, with rock then sand... rock can't flow into sand if disturbed, as easily Wink
