    Posted: October 04 2003 at 7:01am

I would like to attach some of the frags that I got Thursday to some of the fronting surfaces of the LR in the tank. I am running out of room on the small amount of "shelves" and it's beginning to look rather cluttered. I have banded these softies to frags, but I am just not liking it. It's not very fung shui.

Can I glue softies to rock? I can't band them to these surfaces, so I am looking for something else to do. Thanks...

I would wait until your softies have attached to your small rocks then use an underwater epoxy stick to attach to the vertical parts. The epoxy stick can be purchased at some Home Depots and fish stores. It works pretty good if you have a lot of nooks and crannys to push it into.

What types of softies?  When superglue drys it produces heat, some softies tend to pull away from the heat.  Not saying it can't be done though.

Steve Lopez, WMAS' awesome secretary, has developed a VERY INNOVATIVE AND SIMPLE way to do this. It's been posted here before so you may do a search if he doesn't come here and tell you himself.
Basically it is to sew (with a sewing needle) through the cutting with fishing line or polyester thread; then tying the ends of each line to elastics. Use the elastics to hook around a small outcrop or hook of rock to the right and left (or top and bottom, any direction actually!) Position it so that the frag is held against the point of rock where you want it. Lengthen the line and it can be hooked to a jag of rock a foot away if necessary!

It is the best! Thanks to Steve.

One thing to realize though, is that soft coral, especially Xenia, on vertical surfaces will often move itself up the surface till it reaches the top of the next ridge!

Carl- Sorry it took so long to reply. Some how I missed this thread. I hope by now you got your soft corals attached. If so what method or methods did you use?

Mark- Thanks for sharing the stitching method. You did a wonderful job describing how it's done.

I wrote an article in regards to my method of attaching corals and submitted it to Gonzo for the forth coming Sea Star.
Keep your hands and arms inside the tank and enjoy the ride!

Well, actually the setup has changed since that original post. One of the Devils Hand snuk away from the frag I banded it to probably a week after I put it in the tank. I couldn't find it until I switched tanks. It had found a place on the back of some LR and is doing great!

I have not done the sewing method yet. It makes sense, but I have not had the need. Not long after this post, I decided to "biggie-size" my tank. I will need to use it soon I am sure and will try this method. I also thought about applying a dolyp of silicone to the surface and sewing to that as well.

Thanks!

So many corals, so many methods. My theory is keep your hands and arms inside the tank and enjoy the ride!
