Has anyone had any experience with the Orphek LED lighing?  I have read up a bit on them.  They seem very promising... Except the start up cost of them.  I have yet to find a store in UT that has these units on display.  Has anyone seen these fixtures over a tank?  And I couldn't find a single thing on replacment costs of diodes.

They are sweet fixtures but they are for DEEP tanks like 36-48+" deep. Otherwise you'll fry just about everything.

I do have a deep tank, about 32" I'm running 3 250W halides now and heat is a huge issue.  I want to get rid of the heat issue, chiller, and attempt to lower the electric bill by doing so.  Have you seen these fixtures on display anywhere?

I haven't seen them in person, and I don't think any local brick and mortar stores carry them (I could be wrong). But like you said be prepared to drop some serious cash. I would look into the new Ecoxotic Photon Cannon lights (the new pill shaped ones). You'll save some money and get almost the same results.

Thanks for recommending AI.  I did some research a little further on some of the products.  I will probably head out to Aquatic dreams today and see if they have any on display at the moment.  Some things I did find out from Orphek are that all there diodes are soldered in place and cannot be replaced unless you want to chance soldering them in yourself, and yet they still did not awnser my question as to how much replacment cost is on the diodes.  Just for curiousity does anyone know the PAR:PUR ratio on a 14k metal halide?

PUR is almost impossible to measure.

It depends on way too many factors. Every coral is different on how much light it can take. It varies between tanks and every tank is different.

PUR tried to make a splash in the hobby but never really caught on. To my knowledge you could cut up a mother colony and each frag will have a different "PUR" number with it.

Interesting, I just kept reading about it in reviews and wasn't really sure what they were talking about.  Thanks for the info.

have you thought about making your own system? It'll be cheaper and you'll have more freedom of what you want and where you want it.

Thanks for pointing out the AI LED lights.  I think I made my decision on ordering the 48" version.  I have thought about making my own, but I'm not much of a DIY person and with it not being inclosed in a hood, I want it to look good.
