Topic: How Do YOU Skim? A survey of skimming goodness. Posted: August 16 2011 at 4:35pm |
The variety of ways people are keeping their reefs has always amazed me, talk about a thousand ways to skim err skin a cat... Anyway as most of us know there are as many products out there to keep reefs as there are tanks, so I beg the question how do you skim your tank? This thread can be a reference for our members here to see what skimmers their fellow reefers are using to keep their reefs, which can help them choose what skimmer(s) to consider on future tanks! So the format: Post a photo of your skimmer running, and tell us what make/model it is and how well it skims your tank! All are welcome (no contest here) no skimmer is too simple, complex, etc. It's all for everyone's benefit! So I'll start us off:
Elite Aquatics 1040 style cone skimmer: this thing pulls a lot of air and skims well on my 180 reef. The photo is about 6 hours worth of skimmate (I do run it a bit wet). If you need to skim a large tank (it could handle more than I have on the system) I highly recommend it.
ETSS 1000 Super Skimmer: This thing is a BEAST, pulls TONS of air and produces about 5 gallons of skimmate every 4 days. If you're needing to skim 500 gallons or more this thing rocks! The only drawbacks are it does require a large pump (think iwaki 70+) to feed it, which then adds a chunk of $$$ to your electric bill. It's also big, at just shy of 5' tall it isn't very easy to conceal (especially since it is an external skimmer).
And finally...
The Sera PS130: This skimmer is TINY at only about 8" tall and rated for 35 gallons it's very small indeed. This skimmer fits in the rear compartment of the 29 Biocube and works great for skimming a tank this small and reducing water changes. Drawbacks: only practical for small tanks, and the collection cup needs to be emptied almost daily.
So there you have it, post your skimming set up and talk skimmer tech here!

Oh I like this topic, can I play?
Here is skimmer I built for my new 130 gallon rimless. It is a copy of an ATB 8.5 deluxe. It is doing really well so far. Here is about a weeks worth, keep in mind there is nothing in the tank yet just live rock, live sand and water and thats a 8" diameter collection cup

I run a Deltec AP702 recirculating skimmer. This guy is a workhorse for my tank. The heart of the system. Well, Heart, Liver, Kidney.

I run a SeaClone skimmer on my 28 gallon nano cube. I believe it is the 100 version, but I'm not totally sure since I got it used. I just started running it yesterday, but so far it has pulled a ton of crap out of my water. It did take a while to figure out what level of micro bubbles would provide the best skimming. Still make tiny adjustments, but I think I've got it right where I want it now. It is a little noisy, but not too bad. Shouldn't be a problem, and if you were to conceal it in a stand, I doubt you'd here it. Obviously I haven't had it long enough to know how well it really is working on my tank, but cyano in my tank seemed to go down a bit since I added it...that's a whole nother problem I'm working on right now...anyways, I'm working on pics, probably will have them up tomorrow morning. For now, here's the manufacturer's site, with their description and picture:

I did my fall cleaning the other day which shows how I tear down my equipment for my bi-anual cleaning. You can read it here.

On my 93 Cube I went "new school" and I am running a Bubble Magus NAC-7 Cone Skimmer: Skimmer uses a 28w Atman P2500 pump that pulls 22 scfh of air using a NW impeller. The pump is located inside the skimmer body for a smaller footprint (8" X 9" total print). Skimmer body is 7" in diameter at the base, with a 4" neck. The NAC-7 is 19" tall including the sweet Elite Aquatics collection cup. Totally 100% quiet - and skims like a ferocious beast..

ATB 840 v2.0 It does a great job on my 120G. Had I known Tyler would become the master ATB clone king, I would have waited and bought one of his!

I use a Reef Dynamics INS 100, pictured here. It does a great job and can very efficiently pull out lots of that very dark skimmate very quickly without having to set it to a very wet skim level. Not made in UT, but still made in the USA
