So my tank is a 29g coralife biocube. It was a birthday gift and was not sure when I got it if I would even like it. Sooo I love it! reading and learning as I go. Everything was going so well. Growing like weeds! Happy tank. I thought I was the newbee that caught on quick with little problems. WAAAHHH!!! My pride was my downfall!!! My tank was running a little warm when first set up because of all the natural light. But I got that fixed. BUT as soon as winter hit and there was no more natural light everything started to shrink and disappear! NOOOO!!!! ok I have a very happy harry mushroom. So I have learned that this "all in one" can grow much. I have to either get a new set up or fix up my lighting. I am going to have to wait till after christmas. I was wondering why people are selling these used at the 6 month mark. haha! I am addicted and have a lot more lessons to learn.

Don't give up! Yes, smaller tanks that try to fit everything into a compact space give up some functionality of larger, less-tidy tanks. However, it is possible to have a long-term success tank with your 29g. It'll take a bit of work, but it's possible.
I live in South Weber (only a couple miles from Roy), and I'd be happy to come over to help you, or to have you visit my setup. :)

I agree w/ ReefdUp 100% These are not 'bad' tanks; many people who sell these only do so because they want to upgrade to a larger tank - not because the BioCube is a bad tank. How about some more back round on your problems - then maybe we can help! List all your water parameters (temp, SG, pH, alk, Ca, Mg, nH3, nO2, nO3, pO4) If you don't know what a particular parameter reads, just say "I don't know" Then how about a picture of the tank and a list of your livestock? If you can do that for us, we can probably help you out. Otherwise, we are just guessing.

I will get some pics posted in a bit for sure. I am not going to give up. At least the fish are happy. :) my sw test does not test all that you have listed but I will test all I can and post. Thanks for the help.

I bet your alk is low if you have never tested for it. Which would cause big problems in your tank.

Bobc63 is right. You have to know Alkanity, calcium, temp, and salinity. I think you'll find one of these out. Just my guess but I think Dionysus will be right...Alkanity.

Hey...at least you're not posting a picture of tons of hair algae!!
Based on the amount of coralline algae you have, you're likely sucking up a ton of alkalinity/calcium. But, shrinking isn't usually a sign of alkalinity deficiency. It can be linked to temperature...and 81 is getting up there (especially when some of the cheap hobby thermometers can be off by 2 deg.) I'd bring the tank slowly down to 76-78 degrees. Was the tank new when you got it? If not, do you know how old the bulbs are?

The tank is new and the bulbs run warm. They are almost 6 months old. I cannot seem to get it lower. right now house temp it set at 68deg. I have 4 fans set up in the back two running down and the other two up so I do not get too much evap. So I have been leaning toward and LED build. Looks like for temp reasons I need to as well as to save money on bulb replacements. I am clearly not testing for enough so that is a must buy on monday.
Reefdup - can i have too much coralline? I am shocked how fast it grew. I started with one rock with a little of it on it to the whole tank. Your blog is great! I have been reading through it this evening.

I didn't read all of this but....temp of 81 is totally fi. ne. Do one massive water change and your parameters are fixed. I would think about lighting issues, and you can't have too much coralline.

Ive found with my Biocube that even with the fans on if you leave the front flapper door open it lets the heat escape alot better.

I will put the extra fans back in that I took out thinking I would not need them for the winter.
How many watts do I need for my tank?

My xenia melt when my salinity is off, I didn't see a salinity test in here, second for me is alk. Yeah temp isn't too bad, for super picky acros etc yes but for what you have - not at all.
