Topic: Protein Skimmers.... Posted: November 20 2012 at 1:02am |

Ok after reviewing 100's and 100's of skimmers.... I have a headache... So I figured I'd ask you smart ppl! I have 30 gal. But am upgrading in the near future to a 90-125. I want a skimmer that is great, can suit me now and in the future... Any ideas? (Also have a 10 gal sump at the moment)

The only issue I can see for you right now is that a skimmer built for a 90 - 125g system may not physically fit inside your current 10gal sump.
I have a Bubble Magus NAC7 Cone on my 93 Cube / 110 total gal system and I love it.
Might be a little small, though, if you move all the way up to a 125 gal + sump.
For your upgrade, I would check out Elite Aquatics' skimmers. Awesome build quality and performance; plus they are local - so no worries about shipping, customer service, etc.

I was like you about skimmers. There are too many people saying too much contradictory information.
One I would NOT buy, based on my personal experience. ANYTHING with ASM on the name. Total crap.
I debated between the Bubble Magus ones and the Skimz. I opted for the Skimz that I got from Live Rock and Reef and it is ok. Seems to work well. But probably not as well as I would have liked. Lots of control of the flow and levels, but for what I paid for it, I think it should skim a little harder.
The next one I buy is probably going to be a bubble magus from Eric at Aquarium Creations. The people I have talked to lately that have the bubble magus ones really seem to like them a lot.
so there is my two cents worth, for what little it really is worth.

I went with the Skimz as well mostly for the foot print, 6x6. Claims to go up to 200 gal. Tons of control but would like to see more come out of it. Also just by design, if I pull the collection cup off and the bubbles are high I get water in the air intake/mixing chamber. So I had to add a bit of hose to keep it above the base of the colection cup.

Ahh ok. Thank you all for the input. Looks like I'll have to visit Eric when I get to slc in Jan.

You might want to look into the sea side aquatics skimmer. It's the same body as the bubble magus curve but uses a sicce pump. Sicce pumps are MUCH better then the atman pump found on the bubble magus. Here a link on reef builders http://reefbuilders.com/2012/11/14/seaside-aquatics-es5-skimmer/

Tyler is right they use different pumps, I have used both and couldn't tell any difference in skimming or bubble formation, Both pumps come with a 1 year warranty, To me the only difference is that the sea side skimmer cost about 25% more, I have sold about 40 of the bubble magus skimmers with only 1 had a pump DOA and none that i have herd from with any pump problems to date. Sicce is known to be a great pump but i haven't ever experienced any problems with the atman pumps either. We Distribute Bubble Magus / Sea side skimmers as well.
PS, I run a Bubble Magus Curve9 on my frag system with a atman pump and works like a champ.
