i want to start a salt water tank i bought a 90 gallon acrylic tank with an overflow built into the back of the tank. i need to build a stand and figure out lighting not sure what i am going to put in just know i want to grow tons of coral and maybe a few fish 2 clowns and 2 or 3 tangs. the fish are way down the road reef is first so i guess my questions are what kind of lighting ? halide has been recommended how many watts ? also what kind of led"s does it matter ? where is a good place to buy salt mix testing supply's and what else should i grow to feed the coral and establish my tank ? i don't like live rock i just want a piece of rock to grow coral on i guess it will become live rock i would like to make garf.orgs reef crete. i have some sand that came with the tank i am trying to keep it alive i have a water fall pump hooked up in the bucket of sand circulating the water don't know how long it will live this way. the tank was growing purple and a little bit of green alge. also what is a good diet for corals i think i am just going to grow soft coral is there a basic diet ?
I'm not sure on everything thing but I'll give you my advice and you can pick and choose from there. Live rock is a must! I'll tell you why. Corals need something to sit on. There is nothing more natural than the stuff they grow off of in the sea. Live rock can hold many beautiful creatures you can't buy in the store that are way beneficial to your health and growth of the tank. Lots of good bacteria and natural filter feeders etc. Plus who doesn't love a good looking green and purple rock?
Food for corals is a loaded gun! BAM! So many options. The basic foods for soft corals are a product called Phyto feast, it's dark green and smells like rotting seaweed. I also would suggest( if you get meat eating corals) a product called oyster feast. it comes in a cream color and smells like yuck! but my Duncan and Zooas love it. As do my mushrooms. It really depends on what you put in your tank. I'm unaware of any stores in your area so hopefully someone will chime in and fill you with more info. This is all I have for you. Good luck
I assume you are using this link to make your own live rock if so making your own rock is just as good as buying rock at the store it will require a couple more weeks of waiting for your tank to cycle using this instead of "live rock" that is already cycled and it might be good to get a few pounds of live rock from the store or someones established tank to get the benifical bacteria started faster but not required once you get the tank started find someone that will give you a cuup of their sand this will help jump start things

for lighting I have used metal halide, metal halide with t5, LEDs and t5's. I would go t5s on all my tanks from now on LEDs are great to but pretty pricy
for more specific recomendations on ighting what corals do you plan on keeping soft, lps, and/or sps? also do you have a hood to hide your lights or do you need a nice looking fixture that will be seen all the time
