QuoteReplyTopic: Lighting Recommendations Posted: December 05 2010 at 1:51pm
I just got a new 90G tank and was wondering what kind of lighting you guys would recommend. It currently has 2 125W metal halides, but the color is pretty white. I was wondering about using a different kind of lighting for the majority of the day then turning on the MH for a few hours. I like what I am hearing about LED's, how much energy they take up, the colors etc. Is there any need to use anything in addition to the metal halides? Thanks for your opinions!
MH for aquariums come in wattages of 150, 175, 250 and 400, not 125W. Are these bulbs mogul base or double ended? Generally, white is what we want because it contains and shows off all the colors of the rainbow. In the middle of the day the bright sun gives a whitish-yellow light. It's whitish-blue earlier and later in the day and as it enters the water it gets bluer the deeper you go. Sounds like you need to go look at a few tanks and get some information from the owners so you can make the decision that's best for your tank and your taste.

Im betting its 175 w? right? I like the whiter look with a cool blue to it. But lately the 14k and even the 20k has been mighty tempting to me. I had a 90 gallon tank and had 2 175 watt MH on it and then I had 2 48"t5s on it for actinics. It was plenty of light. I did at one point put a 3rd light in the middle and it was alot.... I did eventually change them out for 250 watt mh only because I knew I was going to be upgrading soon. ... which I did to a 210 gallon tank.
But with the 175 watt mh I was able to grow plenty and it looked great!
