 Topic: polishing acrylic a DIY job?

The 150 I won at the raffle is in need of a SERIOUS polishing and scratch removal. I searched and it appears there are a few people here who have done it themselves but it sounds like manually instead of with a power buffer.
I talked to Erik at marine aquatics about it when he was over drilling my 30 gallon yesterday and he thought that doing the 150 is a job that i wouldn't want to tackle myself... Does anyone have any thoughts on if this is a DIY job or should i send it out to be done?
I don't mind paying if somone can do a better job than me and/or it will take me a prohibitively long time to do it.
thoughts from people who have done it and/or sent it out to be done?

I did my 150g acrylic tank...with water in it. It was a lot of work, but not too bad. It would probably be easier for you since there is no water/livestock in it. Like I said at the meeting, you are welcome to borrow my kit. It has all the sandpaper and polish. I am not sure if you can use the polish on the inside, but with water, I don't think it is needed. You will have to remove the coraline algae first.

I did mine and it was a very labor intensive job. My quote was $180. I happen to have more time than money so I did it myself. It still needs a final polish to remove some slight haze. If I got a better quote I would have just paid for it.

It will take some time, but you can do it yourself. It really depends on how much your time is worth.

fj40 how big was your tank you got the $180 quote on?
maybe i'll get a quote and see what it is before i decide what my time is worth... would be nice to have someone polish it up while i am building the custom stand...

My tank was 5 times worse then yours. Eric did mine for 300.00 and it was the best money I have ever spent. Id say have it done and get on to enjoying your new tank...

Mine was a 90g. It is not perfect now, but much better. If I had the money I too would have gone with the quote to have it done right and be able to forget about it.

I got a very scratched 29 g I did used a power polisher with automotive scratch remover looks very decent.

I purchased a 120G that someone left some rocks in it and decided to
move... MEGA scratches everywhere. It had some gouges when
I purchased it. I tried doing it myself but the labor was just
too much. I met a guy that polishes medical plastic
material. He did a really good job on my tank. He's got all
the equipment to take out all those nasty scratches. The deeper
the scratch the tougher it is to get out. Like I said mine were
gouges and I had been sanding for weeks and my wife kept on asking me
when I was gonna get started!
