I have a 120 gallon tank that I just purchased and I need a lot of live sand/live rock. Is it possible to do a mixture of live rock with base rock and have it all turn into live rock. What about doing that with the sand?

What type of substrate(sand/crushed coral) would you guys recommend doing for a tank that will have some coral/fish in it. This is my first tank so I wont be doing anything fancy until I get some experience under my belt.

I read that thread just a little bit ago, it is very interesting. If the rock or sand isn't cleaned sufficiently, will it contaminate the tank?

There are many threads concerning this and I think the consensus was that any rock has a potential for contamination. Even live rock from the ocean.

If anyone is going out to the spot where you can get sand and rock I want to go. We should get a group of us to go out before it gets to cold.

If you decide on using utah oolitic sand and are close to Layton I have a 5gal can of it. Its clean and never been used. Probably not enough for your 120 but might come in handy.
