That is excatly how you do it. The amperage and voltage do not have to be exact. A little higher amperage would be better than lower than the fan draws, so the transformer doesn't have to overwork.
One thing that can actually help a lot is to crack open the top just an inch or two. Some tops actually have a short support for exactly that purpose. Then a fan is not needed.
