Topic: Frag Tank - Going Vertical? Posted: December 17 2009 at 3:40pm |
Has anyone had any experience doing a Frag Tank (or other tank setup) where you had tanks set vertically (like on a rack) where the water cascaded from one tank to the next, eventually down to a sump at the bottom? It seems to me that this could be a great idea in limited space, especially with a Frag tank where you want short tanks anyway.
Thoughts?

I saw a guy put a small frag tank above his sump under his display tank. He didn't discuss the flow, but it looks like the water came from his overflow in his main, which he had T'd off to regulate the flow, and a couple of nano powerheads for circulation, it then dumped into his sump.
I'm sure it's possible.

I have seen systems like that and they do work well. The tanks do need quite a bit of room above them for the lights though.

I used to have one of these years ago. I used six 35 gallon breeders (in two "stacks"). I could house about 300-400 frags. They took up very little room, and worked well. I used to run VHOs over the tanks, but you could easily use T5.

This probably isnt quit what you are describing, but this was my "over-under" setup I used for many months while I was waiting for my house to be built

I plan to do a vertical stack of 2 frag tanks once I get my basement finished. I plan to use power heads for flow and the overflows mainly for filtration. The location I have planned has a low ceiling so 2 is about all I can squeeze into the space but if you use shallow tanks and an 8' ceiling you should be able to do at least 3 frag tanks and a sump.
