Can anyone help me find instructions for a DIY wavemaker? I was told it was on John Rice's website but in the search I did it looks like the links it returned are no longer good. So if anyone might have more information to pass on I would be very a ppreciative.

You might want to get with Jeff ( buzme ) he seems to be able to make just about anything that runs with electricity..

I'm bumping this because I am looking for ideas/tips on creating a wavemaker for my 30 gallon. In the past I have tried alternating between two powerheads to get opposite flow didn't work well for my gorgonia, so my plan is for a powerhead moving water to a container above the tank and 'flowing' into the tank via pvc? toward the gorgonia.

That sounds like a surge tank. Several in the club have built them. The tank fills up. At some point, it drains creating a wave like affect. Is this what you are thinking of?

I have plans for a DIY wavemaker that I got from Rice's page year ago. I built about 8 of them way back when. They are very time consuming and not for the novice. (Which I totally am). I had to have a electrical engineer help me etch the circuit boards!
I can dig them out if someone wants them. I can tell you that the component costs were in the neighborhood of $45. That was a deal five years ago when wavemakers were upwards of $100. But not such a good deal now.
You may want to take a look at this as an alternative: DIY wavemaker

Thanks Shane but no, I guess the proper term is surge maker/tank 
Thanks Shawn. I have an idea in mind (siphon) but was looking for some input/ suggestions of what to add, look out for etc. I'm not sure a pvc tank would be big enough, then again I'm thinking you could get the most out of gravity by having the holding tank tall (opposed to wide).
I'll google surge tank and see what comes up.

Reef Central has a cheap way to run up to 4 power heads on a wave maker that is diy. Look in the lighting filtration, other section under my cheap wave maker it is on the second page of posts right now near the bottom.

Tall, wide, narrow, long, it doesn't matter one bit. What matters is elevation. Elevation is what moves water. At the same elevation a 1" diameter pipe full of water will move the water with the same force as x gallons of water moving out of a 1" pipe.
