Topic: Aquascaping Posted: February 28 2006 at 11:02am |
Does anyone remember the name of the guy that lived down in Provo, Rock Canyon I think, that built a big angled tank into the wall that had to be JLG lifted through the back patio door? He had some good pictures on his website that showed his aragocrete bottom with PVC supports for his aquascaping and I'd like another look.
I'm nearly finished with the stand for my 210 and I would like to build a rock structure similar to the display tank at the bottom of the homepage of fragfarmer.com. That's going to take some grey PVC or acrylic rods and drilling. I just remember the one in Provo had alot of pictures detailing the pvc setup and I'd like to find it again if he still has the page up.
To jog your memories: it had an entire room behind it dedicated to the upkeep, including a big white plastic sink, wall-mount air conditioner, 2 huge sumps made from storage bins, and big box fans blowing accross the surface to cool it down.
Let me know if you remember his website.
Thanks, Sivert55

Gabe, who owns the tank now would probably allow you to come take a look. I believe his username on here is gjoseph.

I'd like to contact him to ask if he'll let me come see it, but I don't know his user name, and gjoseph is not listed. Anyone else know how to get ahold of him?

Also, has anyone else tried this idea? Success/failure stories? Better ideas?

Hey - Jim Perry here -
I did indeed sell my house (and the tank) about a year ago to Gabe, but if you have any questions about it, you can ask away.
If you just want to go see it, then you'll have to take that up with Gabe. Not sure if it has changed much since I last saw it, Mark Petersen probably knows about that.
Oh, and the location is actually in Cedar Hills, not Provo. The domain is Rockcanyon.com for the web site, simply because that was a convenient domain to use at the time.

Jim, thanks for the response. I want to know how much flow was going through those support pipes. How big of a pump did you use? Do you think it would work without cementing the pipes to the bottom?

I had two Dolphin 3 pumps pumping 3600 gph each through those pipes, but frankly it should have been a lot more - twice that much to have good flow.
The pipes don't need to be embedded in the cement, but they would harder to hide. After a couple years I raised the rock up off the bottom and had water "sweeping" underneath to keep the detritus from collecting underneath, and that worked well. It would be hard to do that if there were pipes under there blocking the flow - you'd have to align the flow with the pipes.

On my 90 I want to do a semi Bare Bottom with large (1/2"- -3/4") gravel in a thin layer. It would be good for the circulation to keep the rocks off the bottom by an inch or so. Would the acrylic rods work like stilts or did the rocks just slide on them? I suppose I could just drill short holes and stick rods in to them so they stuck out an inch or so.
I am going to have a DSB in the fuge (just so Mark won't have a fit ).

I used acrylic rods like stilts - three in each base rock (three is always stable since three points define a plane). then I piled some rocks against the stilts themselves where they were visible to hide it. It looked really good and worked like a charm.

Perfect. That's what I will do. I am going to use Utah rock for the base pieces, and the nice live rock from my 20g for the "shelf."
Thanks,
