Topic: Closed Loop Ideas? Posted: December 18 2005 at 7:08pm |
Does anyone have any pics or links on closed loop setups? I am trying to figuire out a set up without drilling. I check past threads and found a few but I am still fishing!
Thanks
Justin

Just for example, those Canister Filters that dnellans is trying to sell are closed loop. (http://www.utahreefs.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=9569 ) Just stick the inlet tube up and over the side into the water and do the same with the outlet tube, and like magic, you have a closed loop.
Canister Filters and all closed loop pumps need to be primed by siphoning water from the tank to the pump. What pump are you planning to use or are you also looking for ideas on that?

He's one of the most advanced hobbyists in the country.... I'm willing to bet he does. Next time I see him I'll ask.

The question I would ask him if I could, would be why the output lines were left wide open like that. Inquiring minds want to know.
Personally, I am not sold on the SCWD. The only one I have seen, oscillated way too fast to create any useful current. What does it take to make it slow it's oscillation?

My brother in law has a SCWD on his return of a mag 9.5 at 5+ head feet and it does not oscillate at a very rapid rate. I would say that it probably shoots out of each locline for 5 to 7 seconds before it switches seems to do a fair job of circulation but slows the flow. For me i think that in the application that Melev is using it the SCWD would be ideal but I agree with Mark in that i would use locline attachments for better disspursement throughout the tank. But if i did read that right it was only a 29 gallon wouldn't need to be directed too much!

I was thinking of building this closed loop system also for my 37 gallon but heard mag drive pumps should not be used for external use. Any othere ideas on pumps for this setup?

Lots of people use Mag's externally. If I remember correctly, the Melev closed loop pic showed a Mag being used.

Mark,
The oscillation of a scwd is based on the pump return strength. So in a closed loop application a mag 3 will switch slower than a mag 5 and a mag 7 will cause even faster switching.
Bryguy, I ran a mag 5 externally on my 26 gallon for almost a year. I've just been to lazy to add it into my 55g

It's not a close loop, but I love the increased water flow I have after putting 2 Seios in my 150 gallon tank.

I liked the flow on it alot. The only times I wasn't happy about the flow is when I needed to clean out my sponge filter
