Topic: Closed Loop Posted: February 04 2006 at 11:29pm |
Thanks Bruce for a great demo at the meeting on a closed loop
system. I had a Mag3 lyning around and built one today for my
30g. It has plenty of flow and with the loc-line on the outlets I
was able to point the streams where I wanted and eliminated the power
heads . I ran it for an hour in my
utility sink to ensure that I didn't have any leaks and then installed
it on the tank. What a great idea!

Thank you. I am glad you enjoyed the demo. I run a closed loop on my tank and I am very happy with it.

Bruce,
Are you making the demo available for those of us who weren't able to attend?

I am gave the demo closed loop away but I can help you if you have any questions.
Rhine Lenhart,
There is nothing wrong with power heads. Many people use them. The closed loop is simply another way of doing things.
Powerheads take up space in the tank and typically more then a closed loop system.
There are many options when building a closed loop such as the addition of seaswirls, SCWD, and other random wavemaking devises.
As far as what type of pump any external pump will do however you need to figure out how large of a pump you need or want with your current system.
Please let me know if I can be of more help.

Mine is a mag3 and is plenty for my 30g. I used the mag3 because
I had it sitting around from fresh water days. I like the system
for the reason that pistonfister stated. It allowed me to take
out the powerheads and only have some loc-line over the top and the
inlet in the tank. It also allows me to easily direct the flow to
anywhere in the tank.

I just finished my closed loop last night and it seems to be working
great. I am running a Mag 9.5 with a SQWD attached to it.
Since my tank is acrylic and has a wide top plate I put the input for
the closed loop in the overflow chamber. It looks better that way
too since you don't see the input in the tank. I had to adjust
the air hole in my durso a bit, and I think I will have to raise the
top of the durso since the pump sucks the water level down a bit
farther and it making things a bit more noisy.
Other than that it is working great and is really moving the water around the tank well.
Thanks for the demo!
