Topic: Duncan Not Opening...? Posted: May 03 2010 at 9:43am |

So I picked up some Australian Duncan on Saturday and it still hasn't opened. Got it from Reef Runners in Orem. It is at the bottom of my tank (60 gal) and I am running 48" t5 HOs (Wavepoint). It is a relatively low flow area, but I didn't think that would be a factor for it to open. I was going to move it closer to the lights and to a higher flow area today. I just wanted to see what people thought first...

Done. I will make that happen today. I just feel so bad for it. I looks pissed.

I put some in my tank about 3 months ago and they never really quite opened up, I tried feeding them but I had about all 10 heads die, they were just recently fragged and I don't thing they had time to recover. My levels were fine and they started turning white, I'd just keep an eye on them.

Duncans typically like lower flow and low/moderate lighting. Do you have a pic of where they are in your tank?

They are on the very bottom in the sand. I actually saw them open early this morning and they were partly open tonight, but I think my cleanup crew keeps touching them. I just need to move them onto a rock I think...

That would make sense to me. Another trick that works is to try to feed them when you see them open. That will help to encourage to be open all the time.

I think you just need to sell it to me. I went to buy it today and John said it was gone- you got a great looking piece! Mine likes a little less light and a little more than a light flow. Brine shrimp and cyclopees makes mine very happy. Good luck!!

Other than water parameters, this is the key. The only ones I have not seen open are in too high of flow. Even after freshly fragging and moving to a different tank, I see them open in the right conditions.

I would wait for a week until any coral fully open until you start worry about something is wrong. My xenia did not fully expanded and pulse until 3 weeks later.
