Topic: Bacteria in a bottle Posted: April 29 2013 at 1:16pm |
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPxExG-FbvI Given that Mark(Mr. Saltwater Tank) is a guest speaker for the club in a few days, and the fact that I'm trying extremely hard to be patient while my first tank cycles, I wanted to know who buys into "Bacteria in a bottle?" Mark seems to. What is your opinion?

Well it's certainly hard to argue against it. But most people just grab some water and sand from a friend's tank and then wait a week.

I used it to start my bio pellets and my tank. I'll be using it again to start my frag system.

I used some - not enough to cycle in a few days but to help. I still went a longer cycle.

I am looking into using colony from ATM when I upgrade from my 120 to a 400. I have spent a lot time on the phone talking with people about these products and they seem to work. I am worried I will have some type of spike when i transfer my water, fish and rock over to the new tank. My problem is that I have 40 or 50 fish sitting at the local fish store that I was planning on adding over time, but since my tank is so late coming from Leemar, I might need to drop them in at the same time I'm doing my tank, because the owner needs the room in his shop. ATM swears that I will not have any issues if I do it correctly. They told me that if I feed very very lightly, I will not get big enough spikes to kill off the fish. But if I feed heavy, I will have issues in the first couple weeks. I'm really not sure what to do. And sorry, I'm not meaning to jack your thread

Has anyone used Bio-Spira? It seems to be the most popular/available "bottle" product out there.

I used bio-spira on my breeder system, it worked great. I will be using dr. Tim's for my new tank.

I use dry rock and dry sand, so I rely on "bacteria in a bottle" to get things started along with dosing ammonia. I use Prodibio, and it works for me. If you want to see a photo of my tank before using it and after...here's the link along with a writeup about Prodibio: http://www.reefdup.com/2012/05/25/product-review-prodibio-bioclean/
