Topic: Monti help Posted: April 28 2011 at 9:32pm |
Ok for some reason every monti cap I have does well for a few months and then starts to turn white! I have a gorgeous piece of orange monti and it is getting blotches of white all over it. I got a new bi-color blenny and it has been sitting on it.
But this always seems to happen and I'm trying to figure out what's going on.

If you only just got the blenny and this happens to ever cap you get I'd say it's probably something else. I'd check late at night and see if you have any montipora eating nudibranchs, you usually can't see them during the day. Use a flashlight at night to spotlight the coral.
The other factor could be placement in the tank. My monti's don't like being high in the tank and prefer about the same light as LPS. I find when I switch bulbs they are usually the first to show signs of stress at the increase in PAR. Where is this at in the tank?

It's about half way up in the tank however it is right under the 400 w halide. I have other montis that seem to be fine so far except a tiny piece of Idaho grape is doing the same thing but it's like the size of a thumbnail lol.
I will try moving it lower and see if that helps:)

All of my monti's thrive in high light. As a matter of fact, one is about to hit the surface.
Those pictures of yours remind me of monti nudibranchs.

CRAP you know I think you're right I looked closer at it and it appears that the white in some places look like tiny little egg things.
What do I do to get rid of them?

I'm reading that article right now lol. I don't have another tank to put them in so I am guessing I need to dip them? Which product do you suggest? Also I am wondering if my melalunarus wrasse was keeping them in check as my montis looked great until I got rid of the last two wrasses I had:(

Ok I looked before the lights went out for the nudis and then a couple hours after all lights were out I went down in the dark with a flashlight and spot lit the montis to check for nudis and nothing! I saw tons of pods and what not running around the tank but nothing that looked different from the normal things I see and nothing that resembled a nudi.
What alk and mag do they prefer?

They should thrive and grow like a weed anywhere with in normal params. Cal 380-450 ppm and alk 7-11 dkh. The weird thing is IME orange montipora is the most forgiving one. When I electrocuted my tank my colony turned completely gray and then within weeks bounced right back to normal color. Mine are right at the top under 175w MH. they like good flow but not being directly blasted. What your ca alk and mag levels?

Anytime I move mine higher they start to bleach out and die : ( - That said I still think my first idea of nudibranchs may be the culprit.
Jackie from what I understand your wrasse could have been keeping them in check. The other thing to check would be you alk, mag and calcium. Although I find that monti's tend to be way more flexible in this area then any other SPS.

Ya I searched the things for nudis last night like five times I didn't see anything.
I have other sps and other montis doing just fine. Funny thing is I always have a hard time keeping orange monti alive. I don't know why but it never fails they do well for a few months and then go down hill:(
My alk was a bit low around 8 and my mag is at about 1300

What is your CA at? I noticed that when my CA falls below 400 hard corals begin to die back and turn colors.

It sits between 380-450 I dose about once a week and check my params just before I do and it is normally right at 380-400 before I dose.

Those look like Blenny lip marks to me. I could be wrong but it's the quarter moon shapes that make me suspect the Blenny. Sometimes fish won't touch a coral until it starts to have problems. In most tanks, for SPS, Alk is best kept 9-10 dKH and Ca close around 450. Stability is also key here. Fluctuation can be murder on SPS. May we see a pic of the entire tank Also, not every coral can do well in every system. Even with AC in the system to clear out the aleopathic chemicals, some organisms just don't seem to get along together. Not just one coral to another but the general mix of all the living organisms in a tank, can make it a tough environment for any organism. The different basic variables also combine to make a tank better for some organisms and not so good for others. Light, flow, temperature, even the foods we feed can make a difference.

Mark I think you are completely right (there's a first for ya) I looked at it more closely when I got home today and they are the exact shape of my blenny mouth!
So should I leave some algae wafers or something in the tank for him to graze on?

I wish I only had to add once per week . If I dont add a crap ton of two part everyday my ca and alk levels drop pretty quick. How much are you adding when you dose.

I actually dose twice a week I think but I just go with about what it says on the bottle, I have noticed though with adding some sps frags I need to dose more often so it's probably up to about 3 maybe a week.

Agreed, Im jealous. I dose every day 150ml Alk and 100ml CA.
I kinda like it this way however since it raise both subtly cause less stress on the corals/fish in the tank.
