Topic: corals are slimming Posted: October 30 2014 at 2:49pm |
Corals are slimming like crazy and anemones are all closed. I added gfo and carbon rinsed very well. Any suggestions? I've turned off the reactors.

Check Salinity, Temp, Alk, and for dead things. If you rinsed GFO/Carbon with tap maybe use RO/DI or water. I would check those things 1st. I have heard of people getting bad batches of carbon? A big distributor/brand has a recall/notice a while back.

I've used this carbon/gfo before with no ill effects, salinity 1.025, temp 77.7, I'll check alk in the minute. Rinsed with RO/DI

I agree with Bryce. Stopping the reactor was a good move. Is the GFO and/or the AC the same as usual or from a new bag/bottle? If new, take out both and let them sit submerged in a gallon or more of RO water for a day. This will dissolve any problem chemicals. Even if only one is new, the one could have contaminated the other, that's why I suggest soaking both in RO water.
If you have some AC that was used previously, use that in the Reactor or a bag near good flowing water, if you think there is a need to remove a disturbing chemical.Edit - my question was answered while I was typing.
How long since the last change of AC and GFO?
Also, if this was my tank I would ask myself a bunch of questions: Is that all that changed in the last 24 hours? Was there a water change or other maintenance? Did someone new put their hands in the water? Soap, hand lotion, etc. on the hands even in minute amounts, can cause reactions. Did I sell some coral and do a quick mix of salt water in a different bucket? I would go back over everything that was done to the tank in the last 24 hours. I would ask the family if they noticed anything. Let us know.

No. Everything was happy this morning until I added the gfo/carbon. I only ran it about 2hrs. Then shut down the reactors

Man, again sorry about your losses. I know Kent
Marine Reef Carbon had issues a few years back but could be the GFO as well.

My condolences.
If in doubt, soak the media in RO water for a day or two, changing the water once and re-soaking to be sure. We need to know what brand the AC was. It's not wrong, but actually good to say so others who have bought it recently can take appropriate action to soak it. Unfortunately, these things happen. I've seen it many times over the years.

When your tank has recovered come visit and I'll give you a bunch of coral, free.
Aloha, Mark
P.S. Leave the Refugium light on 24/7 for a few weeks to put the algae into turbo growth for a while. Adding a big ball of Chaeto in the display during this time can also get the tank out of the woods quicker. I like this better than water changes because it's easier.
