No, you certainly do not.  I guess it is safer if you do, but there are thousands of beautiful aquariums out there using well water, tap water, and even water from streams.

We have well water and still use rodi... U never know what kinda crap is in the water

What are the levels of impurities in the well water? Things like PO4, Fe, N compounds, etc, etc.
