Topic: my xeniea is pissed Posted: March 22 2005 at 7:14pm |

It's been at least a week and my xeniea are all scrunched up. I have added a couple fish that I don't think are nibbling. I lost a couple, but everything else seems to be fine. Both in the soft coral dept, and the levels in the tank. What should I look for? I did about a 7g water change the other day. I don't do them very often at all. I am gonna do about 30 either tonight or tomorow..... What else? I know xeniea is my warning sign.....

I will just give my warning that your system will flood, bulbs will burn out, and things will take continuous maintenance... get over it.

Sounds like poor water quality to me too. Maybe a 100% water change over the next week.

Check your alkalinity. Xenia hates it when it's off.

My Xenia has been in all sorts of Flow/Lighting conditions... I can't stunt
its growth.
It's been in high flow high light, Low Flow Low Light, no flow High Light,
high flow low light...
Just keeps on growing, and growing...
I Fragged it, it attached, then that started growing and growing, so I cut it
off, and now where it used to be attached, is growing, and...
You get the point...
Do a water change, check PH, and levels. You're probably missing some
essential trace elements if you haven't done a decent water change for a
while.

i second the alkalinity check, my xenia is such a good indicator
of low alk in my tank i rarely do alk tests in fact! i've found
that my xenia also seems to enjoy me adding a little lugols solution
(iodine) from time to time although this isn't something i can test for
currently so its a little black magic.

I nominate time. Let things settle a bit. I am not sure what the "week since" is, but I will guess it was an "upgrade" or something. Relax a bit. If you change the water params too much and/or too often it may be as detrimental as having a small period of adjustment and "pissed" critters. You might just make matters worse.
This hobby isn't necessarily geared towards rash, sudden actions. If something has happened, often times damage is already done. Let things adjust, let your bioload adjust and allow these animals to adjust.
Just my opinion.

Hello everyone,

First of all my xenia gets pissed all the time. As it grows it tears itself and spends a few days scrunched up and healing.
IME, when xenia doesnt get enough light it looks long and stringy, not scrunched up.
Additionally, low alk problems are usually associated to it's pulsing behavior.
FWIW, I also left a tank for a year w/o a wc and the xenia didn't slow down for a second.
My guess is that you're experiencing either chemical or physical warefare. When was the last time you changed your carbon and how much do you use? Could one of your softies be shedding on the xenia?
You might want to keep an eye on the fish. As I recall "Chris" had a problem with a fish picking at his xenia not too long ago.
Of course all of this is assuming that your standard water qualities (ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, phosphates, etc) are where they should be.
Hope that helps,
Chris

I just added some carbon. never ran it before. I actually don't have alk. testers. I thought I did. Gonna have to look into it I guess. My picasso trigger in my 55g eats xeniea.... but thats not where it's at. All the rest of the peramiters are good. I have let the xeniea be mad for a week... gonna do about 25% change tonight....

I actually just did a 25G change over and found my alk test strip and it looked ok. But then I put in some buffer and today it seems a little happier....
