Hi,
I changed my light filters and I'm now seeing some of the polyps go white and look like they are dying. Does this indicate to much light? Or not enough. Unfortunately I don't have a Pars meter to compare. They have been great since I placed them 3 months ago until I messed with the lights 3 weeks ago. I have lowered the light to see if that helps but I would like other opinions. None of my other coral seemed to care.
The circled items are the polyps that are now a grayish white and look closed.

When you say change the light filter, do you mean the glass under a metal halide bulb?. I have had issues with zoas closing when my magnesium is low and when I had some rusty pump magnets. What are your tank levels and salinity.

I use DIY LED's and I inserted refraction lens's after the LED's to soften and spread the light more.
Salinity=7.2 Temp=75.5
PH=7.7 ORP=348 ALK= 7.0 I know it's a little low.
CA= 410
MG=1360 PO4<.025

7 is a strange number for salinity It should be 1.025 specific gravity or 35ppt. Also how many watts is your whole led light and what percentage of intensity do you keep them at?

Honestly, I would say that it looks to localized for it to be salinity or lights. Most of those zoas look supper happy. If I had to make a guess it would be predation. Do you have any tangs? I have had two hippo tangs that just decided to take out one type of zoa (ofcourse it was always the most expensive ones). My current sailfin hates zoanthid frags. I would watch to see if it gets worse.

As for the lights, there are a total, across the tank, all 10W LED: Color: #LED's:
UV 12, Don't use.
Blue, 470nm 18 White, 15K 12 Aqua 12 Deep,Red 3
The schedule is in percentage of maximum:
Color 8AM 10AM 12AM 3PM 7PM Night Blue 5 50 90 75 5 2
White 1 40 75 40 1 0 Aqua 0 5 10 5 0 0
Red 0 5 10 5 0 0
Maximum LED wattage=540W
I don't use UV, I don't know why I put them in. I only use enough Red/Aqua to bring out color otherwise I get enhanced algae growth
As for tang's I have a few but I have never seen them pick on the Zoa's, On fact none of the fish or invert's have touched them that I have seen.

Update. I moved the zoas to the bottom of the tank partially hidden under a rock shelf. The zoas mostly opened. The ones that looked like they were dying are slowly opening. The zoas under the ledge are not opening as well but I guess I need to give them more light.
It's odd that a simple filter would cause such an issue. I was using 80' lenses on the LED's and decided it was to direct. So I put on a cracked ice patterned filter to break up the light so it's softer.
That worked as the light looks cleaner.
It's amazing that filter could affect the zoas so much. Nothing else was affected.
