i think my anemone got a bit of a trim. i was sitting on the couch and i heard something getting sucked through a powerhead, just as i looked over i saw a chunk of something blow throughOuch when i started looking around i saw a few pieces of chopped up tentacle. Unhappy i haven't been able to get a look at him so i cant see what damage has been done. does anyone know if they recover from injuries like this? i hope so.

I've had an anemone recover from worse. He should be ok if it was only a few tentacles that got chewed up. Watch him closely over the next little while to make sure his condition doesn't deteriorate and he should be fine.

If you think he's not going to pull through and you can't get to him, you'll want to do a water change to prevent him from hurting anything else in the tank. Keep us up to date and good luck. We wish you well.

are you meaning him hurting anything else by causing an ammonia spike if he dies? or something else?

No the I believe the anemone can release toxins as it dies that can injure/kill other corals, small fish. I had one go mushy on me and it seemed that the growth of the other corals was very stunted and affected for a few weeks after the incident.

On reef central I read a thread where a guy had a large anemone that he split in half on purpose, he rinsed it in clean saltwater and put it in a quarantine tank for a  while? can't remember how long. Then put it back in his tank. the next day all of his corals and fish but 2 were dead. I believe it was called a magnifica anemone.

well crap, thats not good. this morning i can still see him. it is still alive, but not open. it does not look anymore mushy than it does when its closed up at other times. i think i like the qt tank idea for him. the only problem is that most of my rock work is secured. so how do i remove him from the rock without doing anymore damage? also what is the best set up for him for a qt tank? a hang on back filter? if i use a 10g tank should i use 5g of main tank water and 5g new water? any suggestions appreciated. thanks mike.

Jeff accidently ripped one of ours in half while cleaning the tank.  The two halves looked horrible for a few days.  Slowly they started looking better, one before the other.  Within about 2 weeks we had two very healthy anemones.  We didn't have any problems with it at all.  Good luck, keep us informed.

I don't think BTA usually affect other corals to much, so hopefully it is ok where it is. sometimes you can point a powerhead at a anemone to get it to move off of rockwork, but I wouldn't do that to a damaged one as it may push it over the edge. I'd leave it alone, do some small water changes and keep your fingers crossed.

If you just lost some tentacle tips then it will be fine... I had the same experience when my LTA wandering into one of the Korallias. He stayed closed for maybe a day or 2, then it was like nothing ever happened.

I would only worry if the anenome's body got chopped up - alot...

update: he is still alive. still pretty much closed up though, and still wandering. he opened up enough last night that i could get a look at him, didnt seem to be too much damage. it looked like a few tentacles had been lost.  i think its probably a good sign that he is still aliveSmile

That's good. It sounds like he will recover quickly if he doesn't wander back into the powerhead.
