I use super glue gel for hard corals but you can't use it on softies, it doesn't work. Just use a rubber band to hold it against a rock till it adheres itself.

Yep, that's my money pit......It keeps me broke and entertained.

+1 on the rubberband for softies and don't worry by the time it begins to corrode they will attach then you just pop off the band

I can never get rubber bands to work. I always kill the coral. The only method I have found that works for me is to get some mesh material like bridal vail or the stuff oranges come in. Then wrap it around the coral and rock (not to tight). Then twist the ends of the mesh and rubber band it Then put it in a low flow area of your tank and in a week or so its attached.

Oh and thats just for softies For anything else I use super glue gel. This method has taken a long time to perfect but it works great. Just put a dap of super glue on your finger about the size of a pencil eraser and wipe it on the rock where you want the coral. Then put the same amount on the end of the coral. Then mix the two together it works best to twist the coral around until you have little strings of super glue. Hold it there for about 30 sec and then it should stay

The rubber band method works the quickest and simplest when you have a rock that has a hole or depression where the soft coral sits. The rubber band goes over it once, twists on the opposite side and comes back over forming an X across the coral over the depression. If it is a branch of soft coral, position it so the various branches come out between the legs of the X. The elastic does not not have to be real tight, but as the coral expands and grows, if it is slow to attach, it will grow around the elastic. Simply snip the elastic with your fragging scissors and pull it out of the coral. Utah Rock pieces are excellent for mounting frags, but need to be left in the tank for about a week before use, otherwise the soft coral will reject the new rock. Zoanthids are considered soft coral but Superglue Gel works for them. I just bought a supply of three tube packages of Superglue Gel for a buck each at Dollar Tree. My method of supergluing stony coral frags uses less glue and is a little simpler than wickedsnowman's, but whatever works.

David, What's the trick? Wrapping a thread of glue around the frag? Tom's method for mushrooms was to cut them into pieces and set the pieces in a deep bowl of small rubble in a corner of the tank where the flow can't blow them away. When the Mushroom pieces attached to the rubble and started looking like little mushrooms, he would set the new mushroom in a hole on a rock or superglue the rubble in place in the tank. Place a larger than normal glob of Superglue on the rubble and set it into the tank holding it to the new position for 30 seconds. Be careful not to glue your finger to the rocks. Stony coral frags out of the tank, dab a little glue on the skeleton that is to be connected to the rock and set it there. In a minute set the frag/rock into the water. If the area where you need to set it has a lot of flow, just dip it and pull it back out. It takes 2-10 minutes for a larger glob of glue to set hard. Water makes it set. SPS frags can be out of the water for 10-30 minutes if necessary, no problem. Jeremy, That glue might be a disaster for frags in the aquarium. It also has questionable solubility in water. This is from the MSDS sheet for E6000 glue we see a good amount of VOC's(volitile organic compounds): DOT Classification: Tetrachloroethylene mixture, HAZARDOUS DECOMPOSITION OR BYPRODUCTS 1. Toxic/irritating gases and fumes. 2. Hydrogen chloride, CO2, Simple Hydrocarbons, Phosgene, and Chlorine. Looking at the MSDS for Superglue I see that the VOC's are so minimal that California gives it's approval. The MSDS says it does not dissolve but hardens completely in water.

Yes E6000 is safe for aquarium use. I can't find the source but there was a thread on another board about using E6000 to attach acrylic to glass. It is supposed to bond much better than silicone and once cured is approved for potable water.
I wouldn't use it in an established tank but for projects it's OK.

I found one of the sources of someone who has used the product. If I find the better one I'll let you know. http://www.reefs.org/forums/post1326598.html?hilit=e6000#p1326598
There are a few threads on E6000 on RS as well. Just do a search.

Stay away from E6000 for gluing your frags. Yes, it is cheap but I just tried this stuff and it sucks. If your not careful the water will wash this stuff off your rock and on to the rock below. It was a big disaster for me. Good thing I wasn't doing this in my tank. I was doing it in a bucket

I ask someone to pick me up some from the dollar store and this e6000 is what I got back, So I tried it. But before I did try it I did look it up on Google and one of the results was utahreefs. I read what Mark had to say about it and it was safe to use but like I said "disaster"

I use IC-GEL. I have used dollar store superglue but I think you get more in a tube of ic-gel than you would in the same "dollar for dollar" amout of superglue. And it is better in my opinion. (thicker)

I also use the super glue gel from the dollar store. I have also got some super glue gel from my husbands work(O'reily Auto) and it sucked! I think out of the ones I have used the cheap stuff from the dollar store has worked the best.
Also I have just glued softies with it as well to a piece of rock and it has worked fine.

E6000 is not for gluing frags to rocks. It is an adhesive for gluing acrylic to glass and has to be used on a clean dry surface. It's reef safe after it cures.

I have had the best success with the extra thick glue I get from MRS Hobby Shop in Sandy. Usually takes around 30 seconds underwater to stick. I get the 2oz. bottle for around $8. It lasts forever.
