John is right. Nitrogen bubbles from the sand and algae on the glass are normal.

is it normal to have to scrape the algae everyday though? i wish i could post a pic to show you what i see. it almost looks like little tiny fern branches not like the normal grass hair. any perticular fish or invert i can get to help me clear it up? or maybe something in the filtration im not already doing?

how long are you running your lights? how many fish do yuo have and how often are you feeding them? you said that you picked up that sweet new fixture from the aquarium last week that could be bumping up the growth rate of the algae in your tank. if there are excess nutrients in your tank that would also increase the algae growth. these are both things that have caused me problems in the past!

Thats a good idea how many fish do you have in there? how much do you feed them how often? have you done nitrate testing? My guess would have to be the new lights providng more energy for your algae to grow!

lotsa questions where to begin..... nitrates about 7.5 nitrite 0 amm 0 ca 380 alk 11.6. the lighting schedule is 10am actinic pc's 12pm mh 10k, 6pm mh off, 8pm actinic off. i have 2 clownfish and a dragon goby. im trying to keep livestock down so that when i get all the corals and inverts i want, i can select a few really pretty good sized fish. i have a BTA and a LTA i introduced last weekend and i have 50 scarlet hermits 10 astrea. feeding time is usually right before the lights go out. once a day feeding a pinch of brine flakes

Ok, so first off you should balance your levels and do a 10-20% water change if it's been more than 2 weeks since your last one.
Nitrates should be 0, but that's not too bad. Algea problems could be fueled by it though.
Ca could be a little higher, I aim for 400-450
Alk is pretty good.
You can try less MH time till the algea gets under control. (about 4 hrs)
More snails could help with the algea on the glass, but most of us clean several times a week. Get a mag-float (yes size matters, get the size for your tank). It's super easy to use and keeps the glass super clean.
I assume you bought the lights new, correct?

Do you have a skimmer? I always notice more algae on the glass without a skimmer because it doesn't get taken out of the water.

i got an ASM mini g2 it definetly pulling stuff out. i went out after i posted my last comment and got some liquid calcium im gonna raise it to 450mg then when i get back sunday im goona do a water change im thinkin 20% to be on the safe side. i went to THE AQUARIUM this morning and bought 6 small $10-$20 frags , i got a few button polyps a pumping xenia and some starburst polyp. oh yeah i got a green mushroom rock too. one of the six was a baseball size of elkhorn? not sure yet the exact name i dont think the guy at urban aquatics really knew what he was doing or talking about but it was in good condition with no bleaching or decay so i got him too im gonna work on strategic placement of all the softies sunday or monday after they calm down a little

IMO, you need to get the tank in balance before you start to loose livestock and coral, remember, go SLOWLY, here is what I would suggest, you can not go wrong by waiting, personally i would wait for the calcium/alk to balance out. (1-2 weeks) then get the algae under control (1-2 more weeks..maybe more) when you added new lighting it affected the balance again. (I add nothing new (corals, fish)while I am waiting for the tank to balance) I watch for the warning signs that the tank is out of balance, usually it is a increase of algae, sometimes is is just one coral that is unhappy. ( there are many more, I don't know all of them) then start adding slowly, (I added 1 fish/month or two corals/month)every new addition to the tank will upset that balance again, fish will affect the balance more negatively than corals, corals will affect the balance more towards the positive. but that does not mean that you can just toss more coral in there and all is fine. the smaller the tank the less room that you have to work with, I also have a 90, in reefs it is a very small tank IMO. Stacey's nano is very touchy(12 gallon)compared to my 90. I am sure that my 90 would seem touchy compared to a 225. remember that when you add the calcium that will cause the alk to drop, again it is a balance. It is the law of small numbers, it goes something like this. a small input = a small output a large input = a large output you really do not want to see a large output swing on a reef tank. hopefully I never will to everyone with more experience in there left toe, than I have, what would you add, or suggest here?

oh, I feed fish in the morning, corals at night, also IMO, flake food is the equivalent of candy,(use say once a week or when you have visitors start feeding frozen brine shrimp. and cyclopeeze.

Be careful about the stuff you get from The Aquarium, everywhere too really. I started dipping my stuff after I brought home a couple frags that had zoo eating nudis, flatworms, and pest snails. I freshwater dip for a couple minutes each frag. I have avoided getting more pests. I was grateful they went into my holding tank first. Who knows the damage they would have caused otherwise.

i appreciate all the input you guys are giving me. i will get some frozen brine this upcoming week. i am however very impatient and need to calm down, luckily i ran out of tax money so i have no choice now. a far as hitch hikers go, i noticed a couple worms last night after the light went out. it was long and skinny kinda like a bristle but it didnt have legs like it, it was more hairy like a lot of little hairy spikes. any ideas? other than that the only other issue i have is with the starburst polyp colony it hasnt opened up yet. all the other corals showed some sign of life, most of them halve already opened up. and the head of acropora is looking good too. as soon as everything calms down ill post pics.

i need to change the topic a little bit and ask for some advice on my corals. im keeping an eye on my calcium and alkalinity but as far as feeding goes i just got that marine snow, is that enough for all the softies and polyps? should i supplement with iodine or do i just keep an eye on my water changes?

That really does sound like a bristle worm that you are describing, If it was white or pinkish with lots of "hairs" then chances are its a bristle worm.
